It was a 5 Star event in the mud, a gathering of Ontario’s best chefs, food and volunteers in the name of saving 2300 acres of prime farmland. It is estimated that over 20,000 people gathered in Melancthon Township at the aptly named Foodstock event to protest the proposed limestone mega quarry.

In a nutshell, an American-financed company, Highland Companies, has big plans for our prime potato farmland 85 km north of Toronto. Below the beautiful soil there is approximately 1 billion tonnes of limestone and Highland wants it all.

Well didn’t we have just the most fun ever at last weekend’s Vegetarian Food Festival? Didn’t we? How can you not have fun when there are grown men running around dressed as giant peas?

I was busy sharing my wares at my booth.

I was most excited about how excited everyone was over our brand new creed, irish moss, tote bags, and sleeping masks (with fabric I designed myself, I might add!)

What a great week it has been. It started out on Monday when I presented over at The University Of Toronto to their 3rd year Medical Students. They were amazingly receptive, asked great questions and overall- we had loads of fun! I hope they invite me back soon.

Now, moving along. Have been to any of my cooking demos or workshops yet? If you have, you probably saw me giggling like a 14 year old boy about milking the nuts and squeezing the nut sack. It was a natural step for me to get my own custom nut sacks made, which we have appropriately called “My Nut Sack”

Now, would you believe I have yet to meet Holly in person? That doesn’t mean she can’t be a super-powered amazing member of my superhero team.

I am often asked for recommendations for a naturopath in the city. I am usually quick to recommend the person I think is the greatest nutritionist, but sometimes people want something different and options are great!

I am super excited to introduce you to one of Toronto’s greatest naturopathic doctors. The greatest thing about a naturopath, in addition to that fact that they are trained in a boat load of modalities, can requisition blood work, offer dietary and nutritional recommendations is that so many health plans cover a portion, of not all of the costs of seeing one. How I LOVE that we are slowly getting more and choice in how we wish to manage our health.

Have you heard the news yet? Have you?

WE’RE GOING BACK TO ST. LUCIA!!!

That is the first bit of excitement. I am getting too excited and just jumped right into thing. Let me slow down, I’ll tell you what’s coming and you can decide what you want to delight in. As you may have noticed if you follow me on FB and Twitter- things are changing around here. With the launch of my new website, the addition of guest instructors at my cooking school, major features in major mags and on National television and stuff like that, well it has suddenly occured to me that my biz is working, thriving and even more exciting is that the thriving of my business is a direct result of people’s health improvement and interest in living a better life. That’s a pretty Awesometown thing, don’t you think? I am telling you this because this week marks the 3 YEAR ANNIVERSRY of my business. I made it well past the 2 year fail mark of small businesses and great opportunities to appeal to wider audience continue to be presented to me. I LOVE IT!

“Remember that time we judged a fiddleheads culinary competition?”

That’s what my dear sweet nutritonista friends Julie Daniluk (@JulieDaniluk) and Joy McArthy (@joyoushealth) are going to say to each other one day soon. Random sounding I know, but the three of us, along with a host of Toronto’s movers/shakers/food-writers were asked to judge, just such an event.

The evening was beautiful, I must say, complete with roses, champaign, great conversation- kinda like the best date ever. This event was hosted by the fantastically sweet and enthusiastic couple who own and operate Norcliffe Farms, in honour of the sweet rising star that is The Fiddlehead.

Do you know what they are? I wrote about them and offered a recipe a couple of years ago. In short, they are a specific type of fresh out of the ground fern that has yet to unfurl. We love the foods that come out of the ground first, after the frost fades away for a while. These first wild crops are always dense and super powered in nutrition, and fiddleads don’t disappoint.

What Really Is "Raw Food Power"?

IMG_0518

Remember my lovers when I talked about wanting to eat foods that could back-flip and stand on end? Well that, in essence is what raw food power is about. It is referring to the act of eating foods that give us more energy than it drains away, foods that fuel the tank rather than empty it. Raw food power, in essence, is what we need most of all, right now, in the heart of this thing we call winter.

Last November, I ran my first trial run of my Raw Food Power class and it filled to the brim. It was for sure my fave class because it really gets to the heart of the magical powers of foods and how they can heal and build us up to our max potential- not just in health, but in life.

Coming Up In The Kitch

Oh my sweet lovers in a dangerous time, I seem glued to the news these days wanting to learn as much as I can about the situation in Japan and at the same time wishing it weren’t so.

Our planet is shifting and as these great big shifts come forth we have a choice to make- further the problem or be, ourselves, a solution. It is at times like these that I am so over the moon grateful, first and foremost for where I am blessed to live, but also for field of work that I am in- that I have the honour through my blog and classes and various other events to bring some laughter, inspiration and most importantly- health into people’s lives. A population whose health is out of balance, is a sure sign that our environment is too, and vice versa.
