Oh how I love my Superhero Posse! Where might we be without all those people in our lives that make us think a little more, work a little harder, relax a little deeper, and inspire us to keep on keepin’ on? This, my fair ladies and gents is my Superhero Posse and I know that as you get to know them, you will fall as madly and deeply in love as I have.

Superhero Natural Beauty: Nadine Artemis

Creator: Living Libations

Meet Nadine Artemis

Nadine Artemis is the creator of Living Libations, an exquisite line of serums, elixirs and essentials oils for those seeking the purest botanical health and beauty products on the planet.  She is a frequent commentator on health and beauty for media outlets and her products have received rave reviews in The New York Times, The National Post and The Hollywood Reporter.

Described by Alanis Morissette as “a true-sense visionary”, Nadine has amassed a stunning collection of rare and special botanical extracts.  An innovative aromacologist, Nadine develops immune enhancing formulas and medicinal blends for health and wellness: her potent dental drops are used worldwide and provide the purest oral care available.

Drawing on her unique ability to depict scent as living colour, known as the gift of synesthesia, Nadine taps into the purest plant essences to create truly sublime botanical compounds.  Her healing creations, along with her concept of “Renegade Beauty”, encourage effortlessness, eschew regimes and inspire people to rethink conventional notions of beauty.  Nadine’s new paradigm for beauty and her natural approach to health presents a revolutionary vision: it allows the life-force of flowers, dewdrops, plants, sun and water to be the ingredients of healthy living and lets everything unessential, contrived and artificial fall away.

Nadine Artemis Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen:

“Meghan is a delight and playful person.  She has a knack for diving into the heart of things and coming up with roses. Her passion for plants and petals unites our friendship.”

Superhero KickAss Fitness Trainer: Brent Bishop

President: Think Fitness Studio

Meet Brent Bishop

Background: B.Sc Kinesiology and Psychology Minor; Simon Fraser University. Over 15 years experience in the industry. Owner of Think Fitness Studios. Author of soon to be released book, The Think Factor, Functional Fitness Host of the series, Body Fuel and Fitness Expert of CTV’s The Marilyn Denis Show.

Passion: Seeing people realize their true potential in life. Many of us have a lower perception of our true capabilities, my belief is that there is an inner athlete in everyone, an inner drive that once discovered produces profound results in health, fitness and life – unleashing this is my passion.

Personal Fact: Growing up in British Columbia, I am a true outdoorsman, nature revitalizes me. There is nothing more rejuvenating and exhilarating than heading off on a trail run in the middle of nowhere, fighting the elements, tackling the incline to see what you’re made of and then arriving at the peak of a mountain overcome by the tranquility of nature and a 360 degree view of the landscape surrounding you. Fitness is my play, Nature is my playground.

Brent Bishop Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen:

“Megan brings a refreshing personality and passion to nutrition.  I have never witnessed an approach to nutrition that is so real and so infectiously fun!  Meghan creatively inspires us to realize that our approach to nutrition should be natural in its foundation, devoid of strict rules and instead with the flexibility that allows us to lead a healthy lifestyle without the constant pressure of dieting.  Absolutely love it!”

Superhero Eco-Intelligent Strategy Rockstar: Lisa Borden

Owner, Borden Communications

Meet Lisa Borden

Lisa Borden, owner of Borden Communications, takes a unique approach to holistically marketing eco-intelligent living and working. Some of her favourite titles (from a long list) include: Catalyst for Change, Enthusiastic Philanthropist, Inspiration Agent, Strategist + Catalyst, Mother of 3 and Wannabe Organic Farmer. Meghan’s favourite: Eco-Intelligent Strategy Rockstar.

If you ask around, many would tell you that she Lisa has a big mouth. Many would tell you that she’s “real” and tells it like it is. Others will share that she is their most trusted advisor and ally. She’s self declared that she’s not “normal”, but few people who make lasting impressions are conventional. Lisa looks forward everyday to challenging people’s thinking, and starting dialogues that will result in success, and us making this world a better place together.

Lisa Borden Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen:

“I don’t play by the rules, and it is truly exciting to meet and collaborate with someone else who also makes up her own fun and games – and likes to stir the pot too. Meghan’s most special recipe is combining real food with science, nutrition, health care, colourful outfits, self-deprecation, laughter and real life that makes her a shining inspiration. She also has the greatest self-created vocabulary – barftastic, poopershnickled, wowzeriffic…. So, although Meghan’s recipes may be fantastic (make as many of them as you can!), it’s her delivery and attitude that makes Meghan the superhero!”.

Superhero Meat Man: Mario Fiorucci

Co-owner of The Healthy Butcher, www.thehealthybutcher.com

Meet Mario Fiorucci

I am one of those type A’s who is never satisfied with the “mediocre” or “acceptable” things in life.  I was a successful Bay Street lawyer who decided to scratch my entrepreneurial itch (doesn’t that bring up some interesting imagery?).   I opened The Healthy Butcher in 2005 along with my wife and partner Tara Longo for the simple reason that good meat, from transparent and sustainable sources, was impossible to find in Toronto.

      • Today I take care of everything from serving customers to fixing plumbing to designing ads to writing for Meghan’s blog… never a dull moment.  Most important though is enjoying life, which mainly entails playing with my daughter and eating the best food on the planet.

Mario Fiorucci Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen“Anyone who uses the words ‘Love’ and ‘Kitchen’ repeatedly in the same sentence is someone I admire.  Meghan’s unbelievable energy comes through the second you meet her

Superhero Therapeutic and Evidence Based Nutritonist: Josh Gitalis

Registered Nutritionist and Educator, Josh Gitalis

Meet Josh Gitalis

When Josh was a kid, he wanted to be a superhero. Specifically, he wanted to be able hold his breath for ridiculously long periods of time. Then there came a time when he realized that this was just a dream. Fortunately Meghan Telpner has made that dream come true by having Josh be part of the best super-powered team ever. Who says you have to wear a cape to help people?

Josh began studies in these areas at the University of Western Ontario, receiving an honors degree in kinesiology (Ba.H). At Western, Josh showed a special interest in sport injuries, becoming a member of the football team’s sport medicine crew.

After graduating University, Josh began working as a fitness coach. He also went on to qualify as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) helping clients reach their physical goals. Over time, Josh realized that just as important as “working-out” is “working-in”, and became a Certified Nutritional Practitioner (CNP).

Josh is a recognized expert in the fields of clinical detoxification and therapeutic supplementation. Josh runs a private practice based in Metro Toronto and teaches Clinical Nutrition at the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine and the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. He is also the author and instructor of two professional courses entitled “Nutrition in Practice” and “Therapeutic Nutrition and Supplements in Practice”.

Josh Gitalis Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen

As a colleague of Meghan’s and running a practice that works in complement with the work she does, I am continually inspired by the way she has completely reinvented how we make delicious food and bring love into the Kitchen. The focus is not only on making food, but changing our relationship with food in a fun and educational way. I’m honoured to be part of the superhero team!

Superhero DIY and All Things Beautiful Creatrix: Carrie Klassen

Writer & Creative Director: Pink Elephant Creative

Meet Carrie Klassen
The first label I usually give myself when someone asks is writer. I’ve loved to write since I could first hold a pencil. But I also loved drawing and painting. During high school, I lost sleep trying to decide whether to pursue a fine arts degree or chef’s papers – I had a strong art portfolio and had also been accepted at the Cordon Bleu – but chose in the end to study ….French. It seemed more practical. One year in, at the encouragement of a professor who thought I knocked Emily Bronte papers out of the park, I changed my major to English. Oh, Heathcliff.

Now fast-forward 16 years and I’ve got my own writing and design boutique Pink Elephant Creative and teach website writing courses to nice people at Pink Elephant Academy for Entrepreneurs. I don’t normally talk about once wanting to be a chef or artist in my bio these days. But it came to mind as I sat down to write this one because being called The Creatrix ties a pretty bow around everything my spirit loves. It loves to see the brushstrokes in a Botticelli. It loves words, sentences, paragraphs. It loves reading.  It loves beauty. But especially beauty with human fingerprints.

When we make things, we’re sharing ourselves with the world. That I once wanted to master white sauce and now craft websites comes from the same place. We are all creative. Making stuff feels good. And it’s nice. So I’m going to write about creativity and beautiful stuff you can make.

Carrie Klassen Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen:

I love Meghan because the woman can write! (I’m crazy for an original turn of phrase.) But I also love her creative spirit and how generous she is with her knowledge and her passion for the healing power of food. Her work is so important, so essential, and so ultimately kind.

Superhero Student In Transition: Nicole Myers

Student Of Health and Vegan In Transition and Doing It As Healthfully As Possible

Meet Nicole Myers

I am an animal loving, yoga practicing, gym hitting, tea sipping, sun worshipping, whole-food vegan.  I have always loved food and think a perfect date involves fresh veggies, good chill tunes, my fav apron, a sharp knife and my beloved Vitamix.  Now for the nerdy stuff- I am a 4th year PhD student studying criminology at the University of Toronto.  Everyone has their thing and mine seems to be school; I just keep on signing up for more!  That said, I am closing in on graduation and am looking forward to the next step in my journey.  One never knows where the wind will take them

Nicole Myers Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen
Meghan entered my life at a time when I was transitioning to a vegan lifestyle and a more natural way of living.  Sometimes I look around in wonder at the changes I have experienced in the past 4 years and so much of the positivity has been inspired by Meghan.

Superhero Exo Sexperts: Amy Sedgwick + Kimberley Sedgwick

Owners of Red Tent Sisters and EcoSex.ca

Meet Kim Sedgwick (on the left)

For years I’ve been offering friends (and strangers!) advice on how to have a happier, healthier sex life. Maybe it’s because I grew up in an open-minded household with three older sisters who taught me how to put a condom on a banana when I was a kid. Maybe it’s because I started watching Sue Johansen at a young age. But I’ve always felt comfortable talking about sex. When I learned about all the icky chemicals that are in most adult toys and lubricants, I made it my mission to raise awareness and help consumers make informed choices that are healthy for their bodies, and the earth. Through my online store, ecosex.ca, and my physical store, Red Tent Sisters, I get to do just that. When I’m not working, you can find me shakin’ a tail, mellowing out at Body Blitz, or testing new products for our store (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!)

Meet Amy Sedgwick (on the right)

I’m a uterus-loving menstrual advocate with a passion for empowering women to take control of their reproductive health, naturally. I teach fertility awareness, give fabulous tummy massages, and generally spread the word about how to take awesome care of your womb. I run Red Tent Sisters with my soul and blood sister Kim, and together we plan to change the world (or at least this little corner of it for now!) I’m also a mommy to one, passionate photographer, avid skinny dipper and book hoarder. I have an Aussie Doodle dog who looks like a Muppet character and a gourmet-food-making-feminist-superhero for a husband. When I’m not working you can find me knitting, browsing Etsy or colouring with my daughter.

Kim Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen
Unlike many books or practitioners that leave me feeling guilty and overwhelmed, Meghan’s approach to healthy living is both fun and easily digestible (pun intended.) She shares our approach to education which is to offer personal advice and experiences the way one would to a sister or close friend. I love that Meghan’s blog makes it possible to make changes at your own pace.

Amy Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen
I know both personally and professionally what a difference nutrition makes to reproductive health, but making change is not always easy. Meghan makes it simple, not just for me but for clients and customers, to make lasting change to our lifestyle habits that enable us to live more radiant, joyful lives.

Superhero Advice From Mom: Patsy Telpner

Making Love In The Kitchen’s Resident Advice Provider

Meet Patsy Telpner

Patsy Telpner is Meghan’s momma. And she gives the best advice around these parts. Acting as Meghan’s personal advisor on all matters for the better part of the last 31 years. this woman know’s what she’s talking about… most of the time. Patsy is a potter and has been making pottery off and on for the last 40 years.  Her studio is directly above The Love In The Kitchen Headquarters.

Patsy has been married for 38 years has two super fab kids, Meghan and her older brother Michael. Patsy is also a grandmother to little Mia Jean.

Patsy is an accomplished potter (have you seen the dishes at Meghan’s classes?) and will be turning 60 in less than a year. What’s her secret to looking great and being so fit at 59? Regular exercise, and doing whatever Meghan says. Seriously. When Meghan hopped on the health train, Patsy was right behind her. She is the best bit of PR this lifestyle could get.

Having lost both her mother and her younger brother, far too young in their lives, Patsy knows the value of health in a way most people don’t. Patsy lives by her own advice to always “Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say”.

Patsy Telpner Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen

I love Meghan for many reasons. The most important one is that she is my daughter.  She is inspiring and so full of life. I love Meghan because she is smart and I admire what she is doing. It is good for you, and she knows what she’s talking about!

Superhero Mom With Little Kids: Tracie Wagman

Co-Owner Help!  We’ve Got Kids

Meet Tracie Wagman

Tracie is the co-owner of Help! We’ve Got Kids. While raising her two children, Tracie found the book, and the website, of Help to be invaluable. She liked it so much she recently bought the company with a fellow mom!

Tracie is passionate about the environment and about helping families have better lives. In her past life, Tracie worked in both retail and telecom, most recently as co-President of Pistachio, and before that at Bell Canada. Tracie was also the Vice-President of the board at Yorktown Family Services, is actively involved with the Girls 20 Summit, Environmental Defence Fund, and has recently joined the board of Canopy.

Tracie knows how hard it is to balance work with home life, and keep everyone in the family happy. “In real life” there are no perfect answers – it’s a never-ending quest to stay sane and also bring up happy and competent children. (Oh yeah, and keep the marriage together too.)

Tracie Wagman Loves Meghan Telpner + Making Love In The Kitchen

Like Meghan, I spent several years very very sick and no doctor (to this day) could figure out what was wrong with me. With two young children and a full time job there was no time for me to be sick but every 3 months I spent completely incapacitated in bed. My kids were freaked out, my very busy husband had to pick up the slack and each time recovery would take months. When I started learning about nutrition and food I started to notice a difference in my health. Slowly I started to get better and today I have been 100% healthy for 18 months straight. Meghan had a similar story and because this food and nutrition are her passion, I continue to learn from her how to keep healthy and keep my family healthy and happy.
