Pumpkin Coconut Curry

Oh what a holiday we had! So much fun in the sun. And oh so much cooking of the local goodies. As always happens when I come back from an adventure, I have learned so much and now have so much goodness (or should I say, greatness!) to share.

One of the sweetest things about coming to the island of Jamaica and staying in a private cottage as oppose to a massive resort, is that have to no choice but to eat only locally grown, market available food.

I love going to the ‘bend down market’, appropriately named because you have to bend down to see the goods. I love the chaos and commotion and checking out the foods I have never seen before.

Well isn’t that video a blast from the past? Filmed nearly two years ago over a few days in my old kitchen with my un-sun-bleached hair, with plenty of morning-meghan-face to giggle at. This video has nearly hit the 10,000 views milestone and so I thought I would share it once again here as it is really pretty straightforward in terms of how easy it is to sprout your own sprouts.

Most people, when they travel, like to shop. They like to check out the local goods, bring home a souvenir or maybe some hot new threads.

I bring home seaweed. When I was in Ireland last May, I brought back a local harvest of dillisk (similar to what we know of as dulse). From St. Lucia, I smuggled back a garbage bag full of sea moss.

I have just returned from two beautiful weeks on the western most point of the western most coast of this beautiful Canadian country. Two weeks in Tofino eating an aquariums worth of seafood, giving great big love to 1,000 year old trees and debating about leaving my clothes in Tofino and filling my suitcase with seaweed.

Save Me From My Tempeh

I love tempeh as much as the next person… wait… do you love it? Do you even know what it is? You should!

I wrote about tempeh way back when I had no readers here, so allow me to refresh your memory or make the initial introduction, excerpted from this post:

“Tempeh is fermented soy beans. The way it works is with the Rhizopus mold which binds the soybeans into a compact white cake. Now stop your cringeing and read on as this is a super delicious and healthful food… No need to gett your soy-fearing-knickers in a bunch over my calling a soy-based food healthful…

I am pretty sure there is nothing easier than pulling dinner out of the freezer, popping it in the oven, and having freshness come out. For this reason, I am all over the easy peezy patty shaped food. I love the vegetable veggie burgers, the falafel and even this Indian spiced patty-liciousness. Often veggie burgers [...]

Sprouting Sprouties

Shebang shebang to the 2nd day of the Vegan challenge. While we’re on the topic of vegan sources of protein (we weren’t on the topic actually but it always comes up), I thought I would dig back into my archives to talk about sprouts. Sprouts are super powered foods. SUPER! And one of the many benefits is that when we sprout seeds and beans into sprouts, we are beginning the germinating process- getting her ready to grow into a mighty plant all on its own. This means that a whole heap of nutrition get concentrated into the little itty bitty sprout. In addition to loads of enzymes and minerals we also get P-R-O-T-E-I-N. Protein! And protein in the form of amino acids which essentially means the goods are already broken down into their simplest form already, thus increasing our absorption and usage.

I love Valentine’s Day. Now, it is not because I have some romantic notion of what Valentine’s Day means, and I was never one of those girls that had a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day who always knew just what to do, got me a sweet gift, lit some candles, made me dinner or any of [...]

Sea moss. How I love you! I had no idea that you have been missing all my life. Anitanja, our fearless culinary mistress during my sweet Nourish Your Soul retreat found numerous ways to incorporate this Caribbean staple into our daily diets.  Anitanja, with her sweet modest nature, was rather nonchalant about her endeavors in [...]

It is possible to kick start the immune system with herbal and nutrient supplements, but you can also do it with amazingly potent and powerful anti-microbial, anti-viral, and ant-fungal spiced cooking. This, my dear lovers, is what I call Food as Medicine. Oh Hippocrates, you were so wise! Though I have yet to find just [...]

Tempeh "Testicles"

Don’t those sound just yummy! Giggling or offended? See, if you have been reading this blog for a while, you know that I take great offense when food is surrounded by quotes. Like dairy and pasta free ‘Mac and Cheese’ or meatless “Chicken” stir fry. So when I came up with this recipe, I was [...]

What I hold here, my minty fresh friends, is a great big bundle of freshly harvested mint and wow did it smell amazing. This past weekend I was with my friend Josh at his cottage on Lake Simcoe when he proudly boasted that he knew of a mint patch that was ready to be harvested. [...]

I have heard it said that raw foodists tend towards the frail, spacey side. Not so my friends. Not so. It is possible that I have never met anyone who radiates health, vigor, energy and aliveness quite like David Wolfe. I spent this past weekend in Haliburton playing in the woods with David Wolfe, a [...]

Just renovating my kitchen would not be nearly enough of an undertaking for me and so I added another big one (or six) to the growing list. One of these big (and slightly scary projects) is ripe and ready and will be revealed on Monday. Oh yes! Let the suspense build now.  Moving on to [...]
