Contrary to popular belief, I am not a strict vegan. As my friend Elana, who was once macrobiotic and is now indulging in raw cheeses and fish says, “labels are for tin cans”. I agree. But I have my limits when it comes to eating foods that once had eyes.

Wild Leek Adventure Pesto

What fun we had last weekend, when we went away up north to my cottage to harvest some of Spring’s best goodies. Of course, a first harvest of the season is not complete without wild leeks, also known as ‘ramps’. This was our first foray into the land of wild leeks and was it ever exciting for two nerdy nutritionists!

There is great power in the first fresh local foods of the season. These mighty little things are the first to spring forth from the earth after the deep freeze of Winter. And wouldn’t you know it, they also provide so much of what our body needs to cleanse from the Winter build-up. One nutrient of note, is quercitin. You have heard of this before.

Strawberries and Love

Whenever I cover something in chocolate, I immediately associate it with love. Chocolate will do that. The chemicals in chocolate as we know, make us feel just as we do when we are falling in love. And oh, how being in love is so very satisfying just like chocolate. Chocolate is so delicious in fact, as I once shared before, that more women would rather have chocolate than have sex.

Apple halves

Nothing says apple quite like autumn. Wait! Did I get that backwards. Nope. No I sure didn’t. It’s true. In Canada, autumn and apples go hand-in-hand. Hand-in hand like ginger and hazelnuts, like sesame seeds and pomegranates, like flaxseed and blueberries, like cranberries and almonds, like pumpkin seeds and raisins and like apples and oats. [...]

Not too long ago, I wrote about my challenge with returning produce in an article called Rotten Grapes and Ripped Jeans. I have never been one to return produce. When rotten produce brings an infestation of fruit flies into my home I am just going to have to say something. A couple of weeks ago, [...]

Two parts of this post title are true and two parts are not true. This is a sauce and it is made from tomatoes. This sauce is not a secret (anymore) and I don’t have a grandma named Meghan (my grandma is Fritzi) and I am not even close to being a grandma. The reason [...]
