My sweet mango pies! It seems like eons upon eons since I offered you fresh off the skillet (or in this case, fresh out of the spiral slicer) recipe for you. It actually has been. Well the next few that I have for you are uber awesome treats. For New Year’s eve, the man was feeling a tad under the weather and the yoga evening I had wanted to join was all full up. Instead I decided to cook up the best ever from scratch dinner. The inspiration started with these treats we had on Kauai- tofu potstickers. I’ll get to those next week. In order to fill out the meal- there needed to be more. So I scooted along the Thai theme until I came up with two other dishes. Green mango salad was one of them. As I was researching recipes and dressings, I came across an ingredient I had never heard of before. I love when that happens. Even after doing this for five years, I love that I still get to keep exploring and discobering. It’s a bit like being a painter and discovering a new colour exists and then you want to go back to all of your past paintings and splash it on. The ingredient that kept popping up was sambal oelek. You know it? When I first read it, I was all negative nelly thinking I was going to have to run around the city trying to track this down. Sambal is really just a blend of chili peppers. I never actually use is a chilis because of the time I nearly exploded my whole face.

October is breast cancer awareness month. Slightly redundant really, as I am pretty sure we are all aware it is out there, our options if we are diagnosed with it and so we can wear pink ribbons, use special pink lipstick, eat pink M&Ms, host pink themed bake sales and even drink a little pink Mike’s Hard Lemonade.
I think we’ve been aware for some time now, and it doesn’t seem to be doing all that much. Between being aware, donating money to who knows where, and stressing our poor nervous systems with all these crazy marathons for the “cure”, maybe we should take a different look at things. We’re all aware, now let’s work on prevention.

You know those people who go on those re-donk-you-lus cleanses that essentially sound like they’re spending a week, crash course style living the way you’ve been living for the last five years, only to go back at the end of it and start eating like the slothy fatty McFatter standard North American processed diet full of wheat, cheese, booze and sugar?
Wait a second! You’re not one of them too are you?
Here’s the thing most people have to learn about detox. It’s not a diet. A detox should not be a crash anything. It’s not something you can do twice a year where for 1 week you drink epsom salts, consume only lemonade and enema your poopershnickle out the hooha. The best of the best way to detox is to make 80% of what most people would consider a cleanse, your everyday way of living. Make sense?

What a week it has been. I have been doing my very, very best to abide the rules I wrote myself with my 21 Days To Health, program. My most favourite challenge of course is on day 3 when we must get ourselves to bed early. There are three things I love to bits that help me sleep like a baby.
Sleep mask to block out the light.
Lavender essential oil sprinkled on my pillow
3 capsules of Peaceful Spirit- my most fave bed time supplement in the whole wide world (more on that next week)
I have been loving these things even more as I spent just three nights last weekend on the other side of the country, 3 time zones away in Vancouver and then came back right in the swing of things. And you know what? No jet lag! Not even for one night. It was amazing.
I digress, as today I sit in the audience at TedX Toronto, invited to participate as a delegate, I wanted my brain powered up and ready to rock. And you know what does it? A green juice breakfast and a smoothie brunch.

I love kale chips as much as the next nutritionista and (kale chip lover). Hence my desire to continue creating new and ever more awesome town kale chip recipes that cause me to eat entire heads of kale in single sittings followed by the need to drink about 9 litres of water. And let me tell you- eating a full head of kale in one sitting followed by that much water- well, let’s just say that things will be moving and grooving in the colon cleansing department.
So if you just met me this past weekend at the veg festival welcome, and you have some catching up to do.

Do I really even have to answer that? Really? Do I?
No. Because it’s obvious. The berries!
A standard breakfast, so commonly a go-to, is granola and yogurt (or your fave nut milk), and a splash of berries. Why not turn that equation upside down and inside out? Make the berries the main attraction!

Back in the day, before working and playing in this fine Kitchen, I used to work at an organic grocery store. I had loads of fun but apparently I was the only one who enjoyed that place because it went out of business shortly after I started working there (was it something I did?!)

Holy superman-monkey-balls was I blown right on away over the response I got to the announcement of my brand shiny Culinary Nutrition Expert Program. I can’t believe it is almost full. We will be adding a 2012 date shortly, as soon as I work out if I can run a second retreat. You know what I LOVE most about the goodness we’re cooking up? It’s how far and wide this info is stretching, being received and being shared.

Did you catch my segment on the show? And? Did you love it like I love raw chocolate and coconut kefir?
Ms. Marilyn and I were chatting it up about how to lighten the load in Spring. My best advice is always to start loading up on more veggies, mixing in a healthy dose of raw along with the cooked as we transition to lighter brighter weather.

Up until recently, I wouldn’t have had an answer for you either. Barley salad? Who on earth eats pearl barley other than my grandmother? She actually never really made it into a salad. She usually added it to her vegetable soups and I stopped eating those after she inadvertently poisoned me with MSG.

Soooo? Did you see the show? And?
The theme of the show was detox- kicking our bods into high gear post holidays and when it came to the cooking- we wanted to focus on what goodies were going to help us to shake a little of that junk from the trunk but still keep to the season, keep it whole, nourishing, warming, filling and of course my faves- beautiful and delicious.

Now on to the recipe. I want so very bad to post my brand new sweet potato barley brownie recipe but feel like it might be a little too soon post holiday to start throwing sweet treats at you- so I’ll save them until tomorrow. Enough time right?
Instead I have the most amazing whole grain salad ever and this fits in perfectly with our goal for Day 7 of the 21 Days To Health Program: Brown Bagging It.
As I so eloquently explain in the guide, this is one of the easiest and most fun changes to make. It’s easy because all you are doing is bringing food with you to work/school/wherever. It’s fun because you get to be your own little take out restaurant – you can pack it in cute containers and pretend you’re on a picnic.

Well if Okra as a top post was a massive surprise, this one is the complete opposite. Kale chips have enticed the main stream over to the green and leafy side for a while now. And this is the best way to eat it for sure!

It has been one tough cuddle up of days lately. More on that will surely come towards the end of the week so stay tuned. With events I hadn’t expected throwing me for a wee bit of a loopdee loop, my appetite went straight out the window.
Remember when I told you about how Chocolate is like love? Well, sometimes when there just doesn’t seem to be much out there for you, chocolate seems to be a great replacement. Of course, I wasn’t about to go diving in to a Hershey’s bar. No, no, no. I had to think up a chocolate solution that was going to make me feel better in my heart and in my body. This chocolate had to be super powered. It had to be loaded with great fats to offer a soothing back rub to my nervous system. It had to be a little salty to warm my adrenals, and it needed to be sweet to embrace my achy heart.
