Guest: Philip McCluskey, of Loving Raw, lost 250 lbs on a raw food diet! 250lbs!!! That’s like two of me! He did all on his own, by reading about it, trying it, and of course, now living it! He may not be all raw but he is all dedicated to eating whole and healthy, while maintaining balance and best bit is- he travels around the world motivating other people to take ownership over their health and see it through to the bright side. Wowzers, did I love talking to this man!

Oh that pesky little thing we’ve been hearing so much about, that thing we call radiation? Well, whether media is talking or not, whether a reactor has blown up or not, it is seeping and it is not new. Radiation is everywhere- from phones and TVs and sunshine (obviously worse with recurring burns in the same spots). Do you keep a clock by your bed and have an outlet behind your bed? Radiation, lovers. Radiation.

The time has come my fine feathered chocolate warriors. All these days and weeks go by and I make chocolate treats and you comment on how amazing they look. And they do. Oh yes, they do. But have you tasted them yet?

I am all about empowerment. And so I set out to make this video to empower you to start making your chocolates!

Now if I were to start a new blog (as if!)… but if I were, I would call it “And That’s Health Food”. On this imaginary new blog, I would just make chocolate. All kinds of chocolate. Chocolate smoothies, chocolate pudding, chocolate covered kale chips (wait… better write that one down), and chocolate treats. Chocolate treats like the ones I have listed below because if you think about it, it’s sort of everything that I put into my breakfast smoothie just in a different form.

I know, I know… you’ve seen this pic before because you never miss a day of my blog. Well you know what, I’m over it! Hopefully tomorrow I can share with you what’s been vampiring my time. In the meantime so as not to leave you blogless today, I thought I’d share with you a little something I wrote for Metro News last week. They wanted a little something on Superfoods and whether they’re really as jazzed up as the health mags would make us think. So I decided to put together my list of top five fave superfoods. Now if this is old hat to you, it might be a great way to introduce some superfood love to the skeptics in your life. I know we all have some!

Enjoy!!!

What Really Is "Raw Food Power"?

IMG_0518

Remember my lovers when I talked about wanting to eat foods that could back-flip and stand on end? Well that, in essence is what raw food power is about. It is referring to the act of eating foods that give us more energy than it drains away, foods that fuel the tank rather than empty it. Raw food power, in essence, is what we need most of all, right now, in the heart of this thing we call winter.

Last November, I ran my first trial run of my Raw Food Power class and it filled to the brim. It was for sure my fave class because it really gets to the heart of the magical powers of foods and how they can heal and build us up to our max potential- not just in health, but in life.

Holy cannolley doodle! This recipe here officially marks the second Monday in a row where I have thrown a little rum into the mix. I think this nutritionista spent a little to much time sunning and funning it up in St. Lucia. But you know what? You know me better than to think I play by any rules and a little rum mixed into chocolate once in a while, is super-cali-fantastica-liciousness. So take a deep breath and get your ‘alcohol is the devil’ evil nutrition eye outta, here!

The thing about this chocolate covered cup-o-love is that there isn’t much rum and it is the most decadent piece of brilliance I have come up with in ages. And I write this as I look at this giant bottle of rum, staring me in the face. I suppose it may be time that I explain why I even have the boozey booze kicking around this parts given that hard liquor isn’t really my cup of tea (though a little Nourishtea minty igloo- that be peppermint- with a little dabble of rum may just be amazing).

Well if Okra as a top post was a massive surprise, this one is the complete opposite. Kale chips have enticed the main stream over to the green and leafy side for a while now. And this is the best way to eat it for sure!

Well, you knew chocolate was coming. This was a sweet a made for my sweet last Valentine’s day. More people have told me they made this than any other recipe. No surprise really- who doesn’t love a mix of salty nuttiness and chocolate? These really are amazing and if you have yet to try them, you must!

My assistant Jen is obsessed with sea moss. One of the many things I love about her. Jen and I spend hours upon hours together when she is working in the kitchen with me. She cleans up after my Tazmanian Devil style cooking binges and makes me laugh, really hard. On days when I have a class, we spend a good 12 hours together, keeping things going.

It couldn’t be a week in the tropics without my delving in to one of my simultaneously least and most favourite superfood. I hate it because it’s bitter, it’s slimy, it stains things purple and it smells like arm pit. But I love it because of the amazingly ability that bitterness and slimyness has on turning the engines on high in the digestive tract.

Yeah, I’ll Eat That Fudge

Cocoa Walnut Fudge

As I may have mentioned before, I taught 19 classes in a little over two months. Some of those classes get repeated and you know what? I don’t really like doing the same things twice. The recipe below was from a sweet treat recipe I often use in my Veggie Transition Workshop.

Have you ever been to a science centre or children’s museum where you put your hand on a ball of electricity and it makes your hair stand on end?
Well I kind of like my food to do the same. I mean, not that you have to electrocute it, but that it is so supercharged that it just can’t limp out on you. We don’t tend to like things that go limp when they should stand firm… (um, ahem).

Have you been to one of my classes or workshops yet? If not, then you wouldn’t have any idea how horrible I am at following the directions on a recipe, especially when it comes to my own.
I really have a hard time following rules, guidelines, instructions, and directions. I prefer to follow the ones I make up in my own mind. This habit sometimes finds me lost, sometimes finds me dressed inappropriately, but more often than not, results in unexpected adventure.

You can still have your goodies while on a low glycemic lifestyle. Yes you can.
See, when we want to keep things low on the glycemic scale, we can’t just look at the individual food but also how it is being combined. We can combine higher glycemic index foods, like honey for example, with foods that are right in healthy fats, protein and fibre. This means that even though honey may be high, all the other things being partnered up with it could be low, and thus bringing down the whole load of the treat, making it a-okay!
