How do I get a good night’s sleep?
One of Meghan’s followers asked me that question because she is now 50 and having trouble sleeping through the night. Well I wish I had the answer or something magical to give you but I suffer from the same problem. During pre and full on menopause it was much worse and I once read that we go back to the days of waking up with infants.
Here are some things that I have discovered that seem to help.

I thought all my dreams had come true when I got accepted as an intern here at Meghan Telpner Inc., but then came along the CNE program…
The Culinary Nutrition Expert program has given me all the tools, confidence, and inspiration I need to coach others on the wonders of whole foods, along with three capital letters on my resume so that people can now take me seriously. After all the research papers and meal plans (seriously, am I really not a nutritionist yet?), we finally got to the assignment we had all been anxiously waiting for: the presentation.
So, with my brand spankin’ new dehydrator in hand, I flew home to Ottawa for the weekend to present “Get Flexi With Lexi: Adopting A Flexitarian Lifestyle”.

Who says men don’t have fun in the kitchen? The segment I did for Oh So Cosmo on Cosmo TV was Oh So Much Fun! Watch and then we’ll discuss.

There are so many things in life that can make us anxious. After all, anxiety is one of the mind’s way of dealing with stressful situations. In our everyday lives when we get so consumed by the things that cause us stress like relationships, work, sitting in traffic…we tend to lose sight of the bigger picture. Perspective becomes distorted causing our emotions to take over and our health to suffer. If depression is worry and regret of the past, anxiety is an intense worry of the what if’s of the future.
When we become anxious our bodies go into sympathetic nervous system mode. The fight or flight response takes over and that’s when the heart pounding and sweating begins. How we learn to cope and or prevent anxiety is key. Although consuming a bag of potato chips may sound tempting when stress hits, we all know that there are better ways to manage that will better our health.

Oh boy. oh boy! Can you tell how true this is? As my first ever Culinary Nutrition Expert Program comes to an end one of the most important things they can learn from the program is what bits of it they love the most (eating the good food we create, of course isn’t part of that). The reason for this is when we find the bits of our life, our career, or ourselves that we love the most, we tend to give those parts the most love back.

Here’s the thing. We sometimes trick ourselves into thinking that we can spend the day doing what we don’t like, thinking it may set us up for a future time when we will finally get to do what we do like. The problem with this theory is that the one day of doing the bad, sometimes turns into a week, or a month or a year or ten years. The next thing you know, a lifetime worth of time has passed us by and we failed to ever make the time to do what truly makes our heart sing. See, this doesn’t just affect us personally. We don’t just let ourselves down by fearing adventuring into the unknown land of making our passion our day-to-day experience, but it lets the world down. For when we do what we love, we have no choice but to do it with love, to pour our selves- heart and soul- into the mix.

Lately while speaking with friends, I’ve been reminded about how difficult group dining can be with so many different dietary restrictions and/or preferences. This generally isn’t a concern if you eat out with like bellied people – but ’tis the season you may find yourself organizing a lunch or dinner for a wide array of folks. Choosing an all vegetarian/vegan restaurant may not be an option for your group if, say, your boss loves steak.

Eat fruit, lots of cherries, while thinking good thoughts. It is pretty darn easy to get caught up with trying to do every single thing just right in this whole healthy eating game. We read so much, we learn so much, and then we want to do so much.

You may have noticed that I like to take a bit of a light approach to this whole food and nutrition thing. Now, it has nothing to do with me not taking it seriously. I do, obviously, but I also don’t adhere to any ridiculous strict regiment. I could easily spend a good nine hours in the morning getting ready for my day, employing every healthy living practice I know of.

The creed series has just begun. Each week (or two) I will be breaking down my creed, line, by line. Phrase by phrase. This is my manifesto- that I learned to live by to heal from an incurable disease and that I turned into this here sweet health loving inspiration I offer you. I will tell you what the creed means to me, I hope you will share what it means to you!

There’s my momma and I up there, celebrating my 32nd birthday on Tuesday. I spent my birthday playing all day, and got to thinking- what would the world be like if we treated everyday like our birthday- a day to have the most fun, do what brings us joy and do it all with a spirit of sweetness and gratitude. With that thought, I decided that since I am now officially older and wiser than I was last week when I was just 31, it is time to start breaking down the creed. Here we go.

Oh the joy. The fun. The writing I will be doing with a whole weekend free. Sort of. In my imagination, I booked this weekend off so that, I would have it free and easy to travel the globe, leading up to my 32nd birthday coming on Tuesday (yep, the 25th). I was going to go to New York, or LA, or Fiji (in my dreams anyway)… And then decided that instead I would check in with reality because this mamasita has a book to write. And write like the wind I will.

Another great week over here in the nutrition front. We ran five classes in eight days which made this kitchen a mad, mad house.

Well hello there October. I love your beautiful colours and crunchy leaves. Where have you been hiding? I was walking to the Raw Food Power workshop last Saturday and there was a little chill in the air, the leaves were really crispy, and I felt that this was the very first day of Fall. No more swealtering Indian Summer weather going on over here. It’s officially sweater and hot smoothie latte time. In this kitchen we sure are getting into the Autumn spirit with everything from Alexa’s cozy cookies to orange coloured ice-cream. Sounds pretty good right?

It really is the best time of year in my opinion. Just taking a walk in your neighbourhood exposes you to all the goodness of the season. Here are some fun Fall facts:

We work our patooties off around here- as you may have noticed, but we also cook a little here and there, and do our best to laugh until we cry once in a while. It’s part of our creed really. Up there I am rocking the awesome onion goggles Alexa introduced to our kitchen. Speaking of Alexa, I am pretty sure she never wants to look at cauliflower again.

And Jill, she is so over squash.

Magic seems to happen around here quite often. It’s a sweet thing. I truly believe, perhaps more than ever, that you if you give, give, give without expectation, you will get, get, get in more abundance than you can believe.

As the creed says, we must “Offer the planet what you want the planet to offer you in return”. The creed I developed for my life and my work is how I strive everyday to live. In the coming weeks, we will be breaking down that creed step-by-step, almost as a guide, so I might explain what it means to me and you might decide what the words mean to and for you.

It is a rare treat when I can simultaneously show off the best shower ever and my adorable (or so I proclaim) cuddle rolls all at one go. This was at the Tofino Hot Springs cove last summer.

The photo may be sweet but did the title catch your attention? I hope it did.

Remember a few weeks back when I wrote all about water and how I love to bits drinking my fresh Spring Water? We often get so caught up in the water that we drink, that we forget about the water we are bathing in every single day.

There is a whole heaping lot getting packed into this hear little post.

Let’s start with that picture up there. We look a bit alike no? Just thought I’d share the giggle with you. I’ve been told I look like my mom but never really saw it until the above (right) photo was dug up. Apparently taken in 1971, so in the pics above, my momma, our very own Superhero, is actually 10 years younger than me. Aren’t genetics an amazing thing? Take great care of yours.

Two of the most important ways to do so are to reduce you stress (or perhaps better said, improve your management and perception of stress) and reduce your toxic load.

This past week was stress busting week on the blog and next week… you guessed it, we’re taking down our toxins with a little refresher on the detox living.
