A few weeks ago, we posed the question on Twitter asking what everyone’s fave comfort food was that they wish could be healthified. Later that week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Doug McNish, Executive Chef of Raw Aura restaurant for a future podcast and asked him what his healthy version of mac and cheese would be. It sounded a lot like what I have created here for you.

I definitely have an affinity for mexican food. I grew up in Southern California where I had thousands of authentic mexican cuisine just minutes away from my house. If I grew up on any kind of food, it’s hot peppers and guacamole.

Another Taste Of One Pot Perfection

Having spent yet another weekend at my cottage where running water is a thing of far off dreams, we got creative. We have two goals when planning a meal at the cottage.

What Are you Packing For Lunch?

Packing awesome lunches is no easy task- whether it be for school, for work or for airplanes.

Eating healthy when you are out of your own kitchen can be challenging and eating healthfully while travelling can be right near impossible. My mother got herself on the “harass-a-plenty” list when she failed to declare her apple at security when going into the States which is really just dumb because you can buy an apple as soon as you cross security that you can take onto the plane with you.

As we move into Green Smoothie mode, we’re probably beginning to realize that when on the cleanse, there isn’t much difference between what we eat for breakfast compared to what we eat for dinner. Actually, in many cultures, there is no difference. Whoever decided that a bagel and orange juice was breakfast, well, he didn’t do us any favours.

Fast Food Fettuccini

This was my fast food dinner tonight. Thought I would share because it was so awesome and so easy. So creamy and also so healthy. Past is a real treat for me- but I will only eat it when the vegetables over-rule the pasta by at least 3 to 1.

I had been thinking about this pasta dish for a while but it finally cooled off enough outside for me to turn my over on. This was creamy and amazing. And since I’m talking fast food here- I’ll keep this short and get straight to the cream-free creamy fettuccine alfredo. Prep time: 10 mins. Cook time, about 8 mins. Dinner in under 20 minutes! That’s fast food to me.

I made dinner for my housemates last night – who aren’t raw vegans – and they adored the recipes, inspired from the French countryside. I looked through Julia Child’s classic French cookbook and modified recipes – for example, by using healthy raw fats instead of butter (i.e. macadamia nuts), and eliminating the heating process. Et voila.

Chili Monday

Chili. Nope, not something we really need to be eating in Spring as the cruciferous goodies begin to show themselves and I can feel the asparagus yearning to spring forth from the earth. I never play by the rules. In my ongoing efforts to eat up my tempeh, I am continually coming up with new and wondrous ways to chow down on it.

The irony of this post is that I am pretty sure everything in this chili was exactly what my gastroenerologist advised me not to eat on the silly ‘low-residue’ diet he recommended eons ago when I was sick. This chili is rich in fibre, has loads of beans and veggies, an assortment of spices and my secret ingredient that makes Grandma Meghan’s Secret Tomato Sauce recipe really kick it to the next level:

Save Me From My Tempeh

I love tempeh as much as the next person… wait… do you love it? Do you even know what it is? You should!

I wrote about tempeh way back when I had no readers here, so allow me to refresh your memory or make the initial introduction, excerpted from this post:

“Tempeh is fermented soy beans. The way it works is with the Rhizopus mold which binds the soybeans into a compact white cake. Now stop your cringeing and read on as this is a super delicious and healthful food… No need to gett your soy-fearing-knickers in a bunch over my calling a soy-based food healthful…

I am pretty sure there is nothing easier than pulling dinner out of the freezer, popping it in the oven, and having freshness come out. For this reason, I am all over the easy peezy patty shaped food. I love the vegetable veggie burgers, the falafel and even this Indian spiced patty-liciousness. Often veggie burgers [...]

Sardine Fritters? Seriously?

Yes! Sardine Fritters. Now, if you go the way of strict vegan, I am sure there is nothing more repulsive to you than the thought of wee little fish all lined up in a row, squeezed into that little tin. I might even concur if I didn’t know how amazingly healthful these little guys are. I am not a massive fish fan. I started eating it again after the voice inside my head (that sounds an awful lot like Josh) thought I might do well with some lean protein. Hello sardines! The reason I don’t eat fish so much is mainly because eating fish is a complicated matter. Do we eat fish that are low risk to our health, but potentially over fished or worse, farmed? Or do we eat fish that are low risk to the environment but carry a high toxic load that will be high risk to our health? See… isn’t a pot of lentils just simpler?

It is possible to kick start the immune system with herbal and nutrient supplements, but you can also do it with amazingly potent and powerful anti-microbial, anti-viral, and ant-fungal spiced cooking. This, my dear lovers, is what I call Food as Medicine. Oh Hippocrates, you were so wise! Though I have yet to find just [...]
