I offer loads of info about loads of foods- some everyday foods like squash and raspberries and some weirder foods like cocoa butter and aloe. I’m an equal opportunity food researcher.

Today- the food falls into the weird category- and is also fitting after all the excitement yesterday over the registration rush on our Fab Uplift Detox Program.

There is something powerful, magical and inherently healing about the ocean. There is no place I would rather be than with my toes in the ocean. There is also something incredibly powerful about the ocean. Our planet depends on the health of our water for survival.

Wait a second- don’t we, as humans also rely on the power of our water for survival? Yes, my fair sister, Yes! I say.

October is breast cancer awareness month. Slightly redundant really, as I am pretty sure we are all aware it is out there, our options if we are diagnosed with it and so we can wear pink ribbons, use special pink lipstick, eat pink M&Ms, host pink themed bake sales and even drink a little pink Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

I think we’ve been aware for some time now, and it doesn’t seem to be doing all that much. Between being aware, donating money to who knows where, and stressing our poor nervous systems with all these crazy marathons for the “cure”, maybe we should take a different look at things. We’re all aware, now let’s work on prevention.

Though I am not a massive fan of the BBQ, I felt I couldn’t let a whole summer go by without offering at least one recipe that actually goes on the Q. Why am I not a fan of BBQ’d food?

BBQs tend to cook food at very high temperatures. Additionally, most peeps are not grilling veggies on their BBQ but throwing on big hunks of fatty meat which can be become a wee toxic when that fat drips through, burns up and smokes back up. As well when fat that hangs on to the meat gets charred, I believe the word for that is carcinogenic. Lastly, from as early on as I can remember, my dad loved BBQing and never failed to show off how he singed the hair off his arm in the process. That’s just gross.

I stopped eating dairy 4 years ago. If you asked me 5 years ago I would have said that would never happen. I thought vegans were a little too out there for my liking and I LOVED my dairy in whatever form it came. That all changed when I discovered the wonders of almond milk. Once I had my hot little hands on this amazingly smooth, creamy, delish dairy substitute I was hooked and I knew I could kiss dairy goodbye. For as long as I can remember dairy hasn’t left me feeling top notch. I am sure you can imagine what happens to your insides and outsides when a food doesn’t agree with you and yet you keep on eating it. It wasn’t until I eliminated dairy that I realized how bad it had been making me feel.

Since I forced you into the land of Vag yesterday, I felt it only fair to lighten the mood with a little fresh eating recipes. I have to say there are many great things to dating a man who is also a nutritionist- aside from the fact that he’s really healthy, active and doesn’t think it’s insane that I sleep on a grounding pad ’cause he does do.

The best of the best though is that we share our meals.

A few things you may not know about me.

For one, I’ve never in my life had a McDonald’s Hamburger. Now, this is not because even at the age of 5 when I was going to McD’s birthday parties I knew they were filled with toxic filler and the food equivalent of toxic waste. It’s because I was sure they also caused Chicken Pox. I’ve never had either and somewhere in my weird, creatively eccentric child mind, there was a connection.

Oh spring time vegetables, how I love your lovely lovelyness. Who here is cartwheeling under the cherry blossoms in celebration of three days in a row of sunshine? Me. Me. MEEEE!

I stopped by my local farmer’s market yesterday and loaded up on Spring goodies. After yesterday’s post all about the toxic world of hospitals and horribly misguided use of funds by ‘cure searching’ organizations, it was delightfully refreshing to stroll the stalls, tote bag to tote bag with my people. My people, being you too of course, who get the value of good, home grown food and the power it has to not only heal the body, but the mind and spirit too. There is really nothing better than buying food outside in the sunshine, there very same place it is meant to be grown.

Compare for a moment these two options we have when it comes to our food production. The first is a beautiful slideshow that has been put together by our very own Superhero Farmer Daniel Hoffman for his biz, The Cutting Veg.

And it makes sense when we get into the doctrine of signatures thing- where foods that look like a part of the body that are good for that part of the body. Well horseradish is a super awesome food to help increase circulation.

Though horseradish can be purchased ready made in most grocery stores, I much prefer to make my own. Often when you buy it, it is full of white vinegar and sugar and dyes. I colour mine with beets, add a little cider vinegar and call it a day.

Now to the topic of this post, I don’t really have 109 things for you to do with horseradish, though if they always came in that penial shape, I am sure I could think of a few. Wink wink!

Parsley Hummus with Kale Chips

Can we agree that it is a known fact that every time we go to the store, we tend to buy the same things each time- our staple goods? Often these are things that we know we could make but for whatever reason, over and over again, we fall into the habit of just buying it. No more mis amigos/amigas. We are gonna start doing it from scratch, or at least those of you who make it to Day 20 of the 21 Days To Health challenge.

Well if Okra as a top post was a massive surprise, this one is the complete opposite. Kale chips have enticed the main stream over to the green and leafy side for a while now. And this is the best way to eat it for sure!

What can I say, I like my food like I like my men. Sweet and nude. Okay- well I like my honey that way at least. Um… Honey. Right.
Before I was a nutritionist, I was in advertising and even before I did that, I was a camp counsellor at a summer camp run out of Winnipeg. Mia was my camper. Two years ago, Mia dropped me a message, she wasn’t sure what direction to go and we met up and low and behold, she is now a graduate of the same nutrition school as me. Then I see her talking on Facebook about Nude Bee Honey and since I love honey maybe more than my vitamix, I wanted to know more.

From “Testicles” to pickles. It’s how we roll around here. Now, who doesn’t love a good dill pickle: delicious, crunchy, a little pungent, slightly sour, a touch salty, and a tinge of garlic. And these phallic shaped warty green numbers are healthy too! Remember when I wrote all about probiotics? Well these naturally, lactic acid [...]

Probiotics are the good guys; the good bacteria we need in our gut that help to keep us healthy. They support healthy digestion and healthy immunity. They live in the intestines and all too often are outta wack. Use of antibiotics, and diets high in processed sugary foods and low fibre are the ultimate hot [...]

In honour of one of Toronto most vibrant festivals of the year, Scotiabank Caribana Festival, this week is dedicated to the flavours and spirit of  the part of the world I love best, the Caribbean.
