Neti Pot Cleansing

After 14 years of using a neti pot on a regular, almost daily basis – I must admit, I am amazed how overlooked this basic bit of personal hygiene is. Most of us brush our teeth and we usually expect the same of others. In fact, when someone neglects this important bit of personal cleanliness, the rest of us can be easily turned off. How about bathing? What if you knew someone hadn’t showered or bathed in months, years, or worse still, never at all… How would you feel about getting… um, close to them?

We are all about loving every inch of ourselves over here. It’s the rules we live by. But then- sometimes, pesky things get in the way that make it a little tricky to get that self love on. One such hard to love bit: cellulite. Is it safe to say that no one loves their own cottage cheese dimpled bootay? He/She may never notice it on us, but we see it. Here’s the thing- no amount of detox fennel warps, scrubs and creams is going to get that build up of toxins out of our fat cells (we know that’s what causes it right?)

What’s the best solution?

It’s been a bit of a detox themed week here on the Love in the Kitchen blog, no? Being so excited about the next round of our amazingly awesometown Fab Uplift Detox program, we can’t HELP but be chitchatting about detox power.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget just why detoxes are so important for our bods. Yes, you may shed the junk in the trunk and yes you will feel and look amazing. You will glow, you will feel light on your toes. But most importantly, detoxing is about making your body a strong powerhouse against illness and disease. It is about giving your body a fighting chance and making it the healthiest it can be. Eliminating the toxins from within and building your immune system are truly the best benefits from detoxing, no two ways about it.

We’ve all read stories in glossy magazines that feature people who drop 50 pounds, or quit smoking, or banish sugary treats, or give up coffee and won’t stop gushing about how amazingly fantastic they feel. What they don’t talk about is the dreary space in between being sick and being healthy, when you feel completely lousy. It’s as if those people are like mothers who go through 57 hours of excruciating labour and instantly forget the pain when they see the cutesy shmoopy baby. Sometimes, when we make the commitment to cut the crap out of our lives and get healthy, we don’t feel the way we anticipated.

Earlier in the week, at our baking workshop, one of our guests asked the question- “If I’m not gluten-intolerant, is there any point to going gluten-free?” A great and very important question and, with our Gluten-Free Renewal Cleanse coming up, we decided to make that our Quizzle of the Dizzle (translation: question of the day) this week. Gluten in food is a lot like mortar (the kind you use to bind bricks together). It’s thick and clumpy and makes things bind, holds them down, clumps stuff up- and that’s about it.

What fun I had when Wilder Weir from Oh So Cosmo! (airing on Cosmo TV) came back to the kitchen for a visit. Remember the last time he was here? I flirted my heart out with him and it seemed he wanted to come back for more. On the menu were our kitchen fave veggie rice wraps with almond dipping sauce and our conversation quickly went off course. One moment we’re talking flaccid cucumber and the next we chatted ‘poo juice’ and how pooping makes us pretty. Watch my love sweet lovers. Watch, laugh and learn. I often have a tough time watching myself on TV- but this clip even had me giggling. The peeps at Cosmo did a superfantab job of this segment and now I will just wait by the phone to see if I get called for a magical third date with Wilder.

This time, we were talking detoxing.

Working for Meghan and not making changes to my diet would probably be impossible. It has been two months, and slowly I have seen hemp seeds, MSM and vegan protein powder creeping into my morning smoothies, which is now consumed through glass straw. My once afternoon coffee was replaced by a big steaming cup of Dandy Blend. My meat and dairy intake has plummeted, being consumed minimally here and there and always via ethical supply. Overall, these small changes have begun to make a difference in me – and my health – and it only encourages my desire to take proper care and attention to my diet. I embarked on the Fab Uplift Detox – if for no other reason than to kick my caffeine habit and clean up my eating. Certain things aren’t an issue for me to cut out – meat, dairy and sugar are things that are on my sometimes but I won’t miss you list. Pathetically, it is potentially the worst vices that I realize I can’t cut out – like my beloved, beloved gluten (pass the pasta, please) and of course, coffee. (Oh, coffee…you are so warm and velvety and dark and…I digress. You aren’t good for me and I know this. We are like Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. Lovers, but not meant to be… Or something).

We’re busy bees in the kitchen today- or more accurately, on our computers as we manage your Q’s with our A’s and all the deets and registrations for our Fab Detox. Yep. It goes on sale today at 10:00am EST and we have just 45 spots available. We sold out on our pre-registration in just 24 hours and we expect the same to happen today. Remember- $79 when you buy today, up to $89 if you hum and haw and wait until tomorrow (and there may not even be any left). Back in November we sold out in a crazy five hours! Now, on with the show. I cooked up a storm for our New Year’s eve dinner with three amazing brand new recipes that I will be sharing soon. For now, though, I will share a little post-holiday detox juicing loving. This drink is a treat and a half whether you are in post-holiday recovery mode, ready to get started on your Fab Detox adventure or just want some new smoothie or juicing inspiration.

I want you to have the absolutely best holidays ever! I really, really, really do. Sometimes though, we have a little too much fun and that too much fun can include a few too many boozy bevvies, a shenanigan of sugar, late into the night nights and not nearly enough care about our health. Not to worry my friends- you can have all the fun you like (within moderation of course), because I will be here and ready at you service to help you clean things back up. By popular (and sold out and waiting lists out the wazzooo), we are bringing the program back! Yes! Perhaps you want to get this for yourself as your New Years New You gift to yourself. Rather than toot the horn about how awesome this program is and the OUTSTANDING results people experienced with the first round of it, I’ll let them share their words.

Two years ago I decided to go off the birth control pill. I had been using this convenient way of keeping babies away for 11 years. A few years ago I asked my doctor if he was sure it was okay for me to still be on the pill. I was concerned there may be some long term consequences of artificially regulating my cycle for such an extended period of time. He said, “There is absolutely nothing for you to be worried about, it is completely safe”. Though I didn’t quite believe him, I didn’t feel I had the necessary knowledge to challenge him. Fast forward a few years and I found myself discussing this very issue with the peeps in Meghan’s 4-week cooking class. Meghan was pretty clear about her distain for these magic little pills and I left thinking it was time to kiss these babies goodbye. With the help of the amazing women at the Red Tent Sisters I learned how to monitor my cycle and keep any babies for baking in my oven!

It took awhile for my body to adjust to being in charge of regulating itself; in the beginning she was a little confused. I didn’t get my period for 6 months so was fully relieved when things seemed to settle into a more regular pattern. Then the pain started; the kind that makes you double over and want to cry. I knew something wasn’t right.
