We are all about sharing the love here at Making Love in the Kitchen.  When we came across The Giving Keys, we absolutely fell in love with the concept and beautiful necklaces.  The awesome powers at be with The Giving Keys are kindly sharing their message with us and giving away one of these beautiful keys! Crystie Bowes in marketing explains…

“You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love.” – Henry Drummond

The good we do today comes back to serve us tomorrow. The understanding of paying it forward has been the driving force behind the charity I work for: The Giving Keys. Our organization employs the homeless off the street to make engraved necklaces out of keys. But that’s not all. Once you receive the key with your unique message, you must eventually give it away to a person who is equally in need of the same message and come back to tell your story to the community.

The Giving Keys gives me, the homeless, and anyone who touches these necklaces the chance to make a difference. The keys are engraved with words of empowerment, such as PASSION, DREAM, LOVE, BELIEVE, etc. Wearing the key is a constant reminder to live out the message that your word conveys. And passing it along means you want to share the message with another to empower them as well. Your LOVE key reminds you to open your heart to love, allows the next person to do the same, and helps a homeless person to transition to a life of consistency and balance.

The Giving Keys enables those involved to tell a different kind of story. Users log on to write about life experiences, times of doubt and struggle, times of faith and hope, all serving to help inspire and contribute to a community of givers. How will you pay it forward today?

I like paying it forward in lots of ways, but one of my favorites is simply passing on a smile. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been having a bad day and a stranger smiled at me on the street and it instantly helped brightened my day. A smile is so powerful!

How do I pay it forward? I volunteer as a board member at a local daycare where I am currently trying to make the institution a bit more green. With 140 kids there can be a lot of waste and there are a few health/environment issues, such as lead pipes, that I am trying hard to make a priority (not everyone lives in my little green bubble it appears). I also lead a Green Team at my work and we take on green and health-based challenges. Just keeping momentum up and support for the Team has been a challenge in itself, but I don’t give up. While most of my “paying forward” work is green-related, I also support the arts because I believe creativity inspires change. Sometimes I don’t think I do enough…

I don’t pay it forward often enough but I try to do it through a smile, offering directions when someone looks lost or making chicken soup for friends who are sick.

Tutoring, tutoring, tutoring. I work full-time through a federal service program supporting tutoring coordinators in public schools. I also tutor 2 times a week and try my best to help my fantastic students. Finally, I try to encourage everyone in my community to volunteer – it’s personally rewarding and has the potential to create social change!

I pay it forward by working with children and families everyday. Teaching a child a new skill builds our communities with children who learn to pay it forward themselves.
