The irony of irony’s is that this article came out, about how I heeled from an ‘incurable’ disease and have remained 100% symptom free by following a plant-based diet- the very same week I was dismissed from participating in an event that describes itself as a place to be educated on how to promote health on a plant-based diet, all while coaching nearly 70 people from around the world on a 16 day plant-based and high raw Fan Detox Program.

The creed series has begun. Each week (or two) I will be breaking down my creed, line, by line. Phrase by phrase. This is my manifesto- that I learned to live by to heal from an incurable disease and that I turned into this here sweet health loving inspiration I offer you. I will tell you what the creed means to me, I hope you will share what it means to you!

Given all that has gone on over the last week and a half or so I am taking my creed break down out of order. Sometimes even I need reminding of this one…

Laugh at the ridiculousnessness of seriousness.

Have truer words to live by ever been written? At this very moment, I would have to say no. Pooperhnickle stuff happens in life. As it goes. And we can do very little to change it. What we can do, is change how we respond. There is no greater antidote to stress, worry and being serious about seriousness than laughing your head off, rolling on the floor, with tears streaming down your cheeks. We will always encounter people and things and places that take it all too darn seriously. It doesn’t serve anyone.

If you ask me, there is nothing more disarming about a person than someone who can have a good old chuckle at themselves- especially in the ickly prickley situations. When I was diagnosed with Crohn’s, I made a choice to make getting better the most fun in the whole world. See, there are those times where if we didn’t laugh, we would cry. I have often found that as someone who can laugh very easily, the tears can come just as easily. Have you noticed this too?

I say, why cry when we can laugh?  I have yet to venture into the land of laughter yoga but I do my best to practice it at least once a day. It’s truly amazing how much sunnier the skies are and greener the grass (even in November) after a good old laugh at life.

Obviously there are times when we do need to put our heads down, and get down to business, but is there any reason to not try and smile and laugh our way through too? See, there are many things worth being serious about- but I somehow believe that we can take our list of “serious stuff” and scratch half of it off. All it takes is a thought and an intention, an open mind, a lightness in the heart and a wee little bit of a sense of humour. When we take the serious stuff less seriously, it doesn’t downgrade its importance, it just make it easier to get through.

Don’t let others dictate to you what you need to take seriously. Make your own rules. Look around and you will soon see how serious everyone seems to be all the time. Is that seriousness serving them? Nah. Most of the time it is a whole lot of ridicululousness in a small microcosmic scoop of life  that we let ruffle our feathers of joy and happiness.

Though most often easier said than done- all we can ever do is our very best, to have a big old laugh at the ridiculousness of seriousness.

Today is the dayMake it ridiculously awesometownEat fruit, lots of cherries, while thinking good thoughts. Love what you do, and do it with love. Laugh at the ridiculousness of seriousness.

Have a giggle of a time this weekend. And if you are looking for something FUNderwear to do. Check out The Whole Life Expo this weekend at the Toronto Convention Centre

Much love and laughter,

Meghan

    Meghan,
I just wanted to say thank you. I’ve struggled with my weight and lots of anxiety issues for a long time. I’ve dieted and dieted and dieted and have ended up heavier and more depressed than I ever could have imagined. About 6 weeks ago I decided not to diet anymore but I knew I had to do something about my health. I stumbled upon your website and from the moment I started reading I knew it was the place for me. Your contagious enthusiam, happy outlook, common sense and genuineness came across in everything I read. Your mission to help people like me felt like I’d found my own personal cheerleader. Now this may sound strange since we’ve never met but I feel like I have found a wonderful playground to learn all about how to improve my health and that of my family too. I’ve been slowly moving over to a plant based diet. Everyday I feel better, stronger and best of all my anxieties are subsiding and my joy for life has been growing. Thank you Meghan for all you do. You have helped me in the most important way and I’m truly grateful. I wish you much joy and prosperity in the coming new year. I hope that I can attend one of your retreats in the future!

    Much Gratitude,
    Liz

If you get the chance do try laughter yoga. I’ve only been once. It was strange and uncomfortable, but that was only at the beginning. By the end it had transformed into something completely awesometown. In retrospect, the transformation may have been in me. I started with a “this is ridiculous” attitude. By the end I was laughing at this same ridiculousness. And not just polite tittering. It was full-on, open-hearted, out-of-control, snorting, crying, laugh-til-it-aches laughter. Somehow I think you’d like it!

    Hahahahahahahhohohohohohoheeheeheehee….

    Have a great weekend Meghan!

  3. I will be the first to admit I can be farrrr too serious at times. This part of the creed might be the hardest for me to live daily… BUT it def helps that I married a man who makes me CRACK up (like tears and belly aches) daily. In the most stressful or hard situation he knows just what to say or do to get me to laugh at it all. He does it for everyone else around him too (his favorite thing to try to do is attempting to get grumpy cashiers/customer service people to crack a smile/laugh… it’s like a personal challenge). It’s prob the thing I love most about him :) .

Perhaps my favourite part in the creed and something I am constantly seeking to work toward on a daily basis. Every time I’m running late or feel overwhelmed with school work or annoyed at traffic, I have to remind myself how miniscule these things are. My little niece and nephew help with that a lot especially when my nephew finds my bra on the floor and asks “why my underwear has 2 spots for the bum?” How can you not forget about what’s stressing you and laugh? My husband’s endless impersonations of Borat also do the trick:)

Sometimes, no, most times, you just need to smile. It helps so much.

I love that your story is in this magazine, I hope it reaches the masses!

Like Ami, far too often, I am often way too serious. I also married a man who reminds me to laugh, and we laugh together daily. At our wedding I included these words in my vows: “… most special to me is that I laugh. With you, I have learned to laugh, even at myself.” It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it :)

  10. I read the book by Jordan Rubin N.D. who cured his Crohn’s disease. The following was not in the book but he did learn about it later.

You will have to change your diet, but the quickest way to heal this disease is to give your colon a vacation. The colon is constantly contracting and relaxing and this is known as peristalsis. Now I never read this anywhere but figured this out. When you fast and only consume pure water, this peristalslis stops. It starts again after you break the fast.

During the fast this vacation causes the colon to heal itself in the quickest possible way. Jesus, Moses, Pythagoras, Gandhi and Mark Twain all fasted.
