Two months until the first St. Lucia retreat. Don’t be left out in the cold! And don’t miss this week’s special holiday Vitamix offer.
We all know that famous quote by Hippocrates right? “Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food”? Of course. And of course it’s true.
What if we look at the definition of each for a moment here:
Food: The Definition
Material, usually of plant or animal origin, that contains or consists of essential body nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals, and is ingested and assimilated by an organism to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life.
Medicine: The Definition
1. a) The science of diagnosing, treating, or preventing disease and other damage to the body or mind. b) The branch of this science encompassing treatment by drugs, diet, exercise, and other non-surgical means.
2. An agent, such as a drug, used to treat disease or injury.
3. Something that serves as a remedy or corrective.
Now, what if we join these two? It’s easy right? We used our food to serve as the remedy or corrective.
As you know, last week I was down in California with my brother and his family visiting our parents. My dad is a busy bee healing from his cancer, and I am so excited over the changes he has not only taken on, but fully and completely embraced.
This way of living may seem scary, overwhelming, or even unpalatable. The thing is, the more of these goods you have, the more you want to have and before you know it, it is your life, your tastes change and most of all, you feel amazing. Tomorrow, I have a very special podcast interview with my dad on my final morning in California. But this is how the days went down.
We all started with our daily dose of Green Juice. Whoever says their kids wouldn’t touch it, just hasn’t tried. Or kept trying. Mia couldn’t get enough and my brother and sister-in-law both said they missed it when they were back home. This stuff is life blood and fully picks up your day. Just as many people have their morning coffee ritual, what if that ritual was a morning green juice ritual? Just a thought.
We would then head off to the ‘pharmacy’ to get our ‘medicine’. Or perhaps we can describe it as heading to the market, for fresh, local, organic greatness.
Afternoons were spent resting, relaxing and exploring and we would then sit down to another dose of medicine together in the evening. Tonight’s prescription, steamed beans and Brussel’s Sprouts, wild rice, grilled salmon, fresh green salad with a miso dressing and roasted sweet potatoes. Yep, this healthy eating thing is really terrible.
And what is the best part of this food as medicine thing? Dessert of course. My dad is staying away from sugar, as we know sugar feeds cancer, affects stress hormones and depletes immune function, and all that other bad stuff, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have dessert and eat loads and loads of cancer fighting berries.
Raw Chocolate Mousse anyone?
Raw Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Pulp from 2 young coconuts
1 avocado
1/2 cup raw cacao
2 tsp maca
2 Tbs chia seeds
1/4 cup raw honey (or to taste if you are watching sweetener)
- Blend until smooth in your high speed brand new vitamix blender
- Serve chilled in a small bowl, or serve as a dip with a selection of your favourite fruits.
And since food is not everything when it comes to healing, how about ending the day with a little rest, relaxation and perhaps getting your eyes, body and soul nourished by a little burst of beauty.

Aren’t we all (glad he’s doing well… not adorable)
Your dad is looking great
How is he feeling? and How’s your family coping with his cancer?
We’re all good Samantha. Check the interview I have with him tomorrow!
awww, I can’t wait to try green smoothies with my son
Start them young! That’s my best advice.
It’s hard to concentrate when there is such a scrumptious pair of cheeks in front of me! Mia is amazing!!
I love the idea of a family gathered around a table at breakfast sipping on their green juices. Maybe one day, THAT will be the standard!
We’re all working on that!
My kids (ages 12, 10, 5) all LOVE green smoothies!! And thanks to you for starting me down the green smoothie path with your awesome tutorial!! Time to start cooking for our Thanksgiving tomorrow — all yummy healthy food.
Sooo happy for your dad and family — what a blessing to heal through foods.
A teacher at my kids elementary school stopped me yesterday… she said they are thinking about having a health fair and my name was brought up to help with it. Oooh, perhaps I could get every child to try a green smoothie!!!!!
Amazing! Let me know if I can help out- could maybe send some of my Green Smoothie tutorials on CD as prizes or something.
My sister started my little ones on “green smoothies” and they love them! I was skeptical at first, but now we have them all summer long. In the winter we tend more toward green soups.
This is such a cute post Meghan and definitely good words of advice for those who don’t think children will eat healthy foods! Love that first picture of you with the little one, just adorable.
Nice! My baby shares my green smoothie with me every morning

So adorable!!!! I think people don’t give kids enough credit! I’m so happy to see how great your dad is doing.
My goodness it seems like yesterday that Mia was just born – what a peach! Your dad looks wonderful. God bless you all.
Great post, too
Thank you! Mia is for sure the star of the Telpner clan. We celebrated her 10 month birthday a couple days ago.
