Planning for a year of health? Check out Meghan’s upcoming retreats and corporate health and nutrition programs available. And PLEASE come visit me next weekend at the Toronto Vegetarian Food Fair. I have a booth and my cooking demo starts at 12:00 pm sharp on Saturday, September 11th.

Got to love the summer bonfire. A part of Canadian cottaging and camping for sure. Since giving up marshmallows due to the mystery factor (what really are they) and the potential presence of horse hooves, I have been at a loss over what to roast over the open flame of a campfire.

As we approach the last August weekend, I encourage you to have a bonfire (assuming there are no fire bans in your area) and roast something on it. Obviously, I would suggest staying away from the typical hot dog and marshmallow and so now you’re wondering what on earth you could do as that rules out even the typical s’mores.  I have an answer!

Banana Boats my love sweet bonfire lovers. What we’re creating here are Banana Boats made from the best raw, whole food ingredients. I have no idea how I come up with these ideas but I do and everyone around these parts is happier for it.

Granted, using raw ingredients means little when you are throwing it all onto hot coals but why not be in control of the heat. As well- I know it is not ideal to eat food heated at high temperatures that has been wrapped in aluminum foil but again, this is a treat- an occasional affair, not an everyday lover.

And as far as treats go- this one is awesome. There are no outlandish or extravagant ingredients needed, just your everyday oatmeal or smoothie goods.

Have a great last August Weekend!

Banana Banana Cacao Boats

(recipe for 1, multiply as needed for as many boats as you be sailing)
1 banana (leave peel on)
1 Tbs raw cacao (or cocoa)
1-2 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp honey
1 square of aluminum foil
1 bonfire

  • Slice bananas down the middle and pry open a little with a spoon
  • Carefully sprinkle in cacao powder, then coconut oil, then honey
  • Squeeze banana back together and wrap tightly with foil
  • Carefully place in fire on hot coals
  • Leave for 8-10 minutes or until you start to hear a little sizzling
  • Unwrap carefully
  • Dig in! You’ll be amazed how fast these dissapear

Question Of The Day: What are your fave campfire foods or memories?

I used to make something similar when I was a kid….except I would add those lovely marshmallows and pieces of a not so healthy chocolate bar :(
This version looks much better. Would also be great with some almond butter…Mmmmmm!
I am going to be up at the cottage all week next week! I will def try this!
Have a great weekend, Jamie ;O)
P.S. where is your cottage in Halliburton? I am on Kennisis Lake!

They do have vegan marshmallows, granted they are still made out of corn and sugar but at least they don’t have gelatin in them…Sweet & Sara are the ones I get for the rare occasion I do get to make s’mores (maybe once a year). The banana boats look awesome…will have to try!

  4. Those look so good! I have to agree with jamie about the almond butter! Yum. I love bananas and nut butter.

I have made them in the past with chocolate chips. Nowdays I might make them with grain sweentened chocolate chips. Also, a plain roasted banana is good on a cool evening. Maybe with some honey or brown rice syrup to give the sticky effect of marshmellows.

Okay – seriously!? This is a drool inducing post. SO many of yours are … but this one… I can smell the camp fire and taste that gooey bit of heaven! I think the sweetest part is that it comes in it’s own little bowl. Adorable, delicious and eco friendly! LoL. You rock. : )
