Basil and Mint are like brothers from different mothers. They are in season at the same time, they kind of look alike if you squint and taste oh, so amazing together. The one major difference, outside of taste, is that mint grows like a weed on speed and basil, well, I have a gift for killing plants and let’s just say basil isn’t tough enough to handle my developmentally disabled green thumb.
We talked a lot about mint on our Digestive Healing Retreat as mint is a delicious, healing herb. Not only does the green make it rich in chlorophyll (the goods on chlorophyll are here), mint is great for:
- Soothing the digestive tract and reducing the severity and length of stomach aches.
- Easing the discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome
- Slowing the growth of many of the most harmful bacteria and fungi.
- Treating allergies and asthma thanks to the well-documented antifungal properties.
- Helping prevent cancer: mint contains a phytonutrient called perillyl alcohol, which has been shown to prevent the formation of colon, skin and lung cancer.
If you are looking for an awesome way to use both together, how about this delightful pesto recipe first posted in August of 2009. Get the recipe here!

As a kid my mom always used to make mint salads with mint, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. I didn’t like it then, but I could totally get into it now.
— is mint and fresh fruit
My favourite combination with mint — excluding the mojito
Hey… nothing wrong with a mojito! I do mine with kombucha
LOVE the two! Growing up my Grandparents had pots of these luscious hebs in their garden. Huge pots of basil, mint, oregano, aloe, and lemongrass to name a few. I would spend hours sitting in the garden taking in the delicious aromas. As an adult I grow the oregano, mint, but basil… well lets say… I am challenged. Looking forward to the 2nd Edition Green Smoothie Cleanse! Thanks for all your posts.
I say mint and coriander are my 2 favorite summer herbs. Mint blended into chocolate smoothies are totally refreshing.
That is a definite favourite!
I finally have a fully functioning basil plant! It basically needs a lot of sun and a lot of water… indoors basil doesn’t do so well.
I think the best minty meal is fresh Ontario peas and chopped mint, with a little dressing mixed in. Super green!
I love that one Vanessa! I make mine with leeks too.
LOVE BASIL!!! SO YUMMY ;O)
love fresh mint tea!
It’s funny because I have an extreme love for basil. On my 19th birthday (last year), my Mom surprised me with my very own basil plant. Every day, I’d faithfully take him outside for Sunshine, water him, and take him in at night. Unfortunately, I guess I ate too much of him, and he died. He died a very tragic death–naked.
See? A classic case of love hurts.
Anyways, this year I decided to join a community garden, and learned that mint really does grow like ‘a weed on speed’. Ha! So I harvested a bunch and made my own homemade mint ice cream with coconut milk, raisins, and ground flax seeds!
MMM! I am loving my new herb garden this year. I went a bit crazy with the mint and basil. I have about 4 different basil plants and a pinapple mint, orange mint and a peppermint plant. Looooving them!
