Only a few spots left on our Digestive Healing Total Health Retreat taking place June 25th – June 27th in Midland, ON! And if you want to get cooking, act fast! Healing with Super Foods on June 13th and Easy Indian on June 15th are the last classes until the fall.

As you know (you better know!), I have a Healing with Superfoods workshop coming up on Sunday. Sad to say but it is my very last workshop until the fall and there are only a child’s size handful of spots left. Sarah, over at That’s Fit wanted the inside scoop on how we, over here at Making Love In The Kitchen, feel about our superfoods. With the help of my delightful comrade and nutritionista Cara Rice, we told her!

How to Get More Super Foods in Your Daily Diet
First published on That’s Fit, May 26th 2010
Feeling like you could use a boost? Nutritionist Meghan Telpner, who runs a super foods workshop in Toronto, explains the benefits of super foods and how to make your diet more super on a daily basis.
Q: Can you give me some examples of super foods?
A: There are so many! I think of broccoli, sprouts, seaweeds, mushrooms and seeds as our ‘everyday’ superfoods. They are generally 95 percent better for you than most foods found in the supermarket. Then we have the ‘super-powered’ foods like chia seeds, cacao, goji berrries, maca, spirulina and aloe. These exotic powerhouses might come from a bit of a distance, but they carry the most amazing healing abilities. There are also the ‘super-healing’ herbs and spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and ginger.
Q: What makes a super food so super?
A: Superfoods are generally nutrient-packed power foods that contain a high concentration of phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants. Many of the ‘super-powered’ foods are among the greatest sources of essential fatty acids and essential amino aids, which can be trickier to find in plant-based foods. But the greatest thing about superfoods is that they are amazingly delicious and can turn any dessert into a super-powered healing medicine!
Q: What role do super foods play in our health?
A: These foods carry amazing healing, repairing and balancing abilities due to their rich concentration of phytonutrients. If we are eating more superfoods then we are going to eat less of the not-so-super foods. And as a direct result of increasing our intake of nutrient-dense, whole, super-healing foods – we improve the way our metabolism functions, how we utilize energy and how super-powered amazing we feel.
Q: Do you have any top picks for super foods everyone should add to their diet?
A: As with anything, variety is key. We should do our best to eat different kinds of them as often as possible. But if I had to choose a few that would benefit most people, they would be:
1. Cacao. Aside from the obvious reasons (yum!), raw cacao contains more antioxidant flavonoids and more magnesium than any other food tested. It enhances physical and mental well-being, relaxes muscles and keeps us feeling happy, young and lively.
2. Raw Honey. Honey is a powerful immune system booster, containing 27 minerals, 22 amino acids and 5,000 live enzymes. One daily spoonful in your tea or spread on your toast is all that is needed to reap the benefits.
3. Spirulina. In addition to having the most remarkable concentration of nutrients known in any food, it contains over 60 percent all-digestible protein. It can be added to smoothies, sprinkled on salads, added to dips or even mixed into homemade breads. (Tip: Mix spirulina with lemon to dilute the fishy taste.)
Q: Can you give me some tips on how to incorporate super foods into everyday eating?
A: Pretty much all of the super-powered foods can be added to smoothies, porridge or mixed into breads or cookies. I like to keep equal part of my favourites (hemp seeds, goji, flax, cacao, chia and maca) together in a jar, so that I can easily sprinkle a nice pre-mixed blend. Sprouts, mushrooms and seaweeds can easily be added to any salad, soups or sauces.
