You know I love smoothies. I love smoothies to bits. They are my fave go-to fast food meals and I always feel fantastic after. This however wasn’t always the case. I was sick for several years with digestive challenges and during this time, smoothies weren’t always my friend.
Fibre is definitely essential for digestive and colon health, but if things down in that neighbourhood are at all irritated, sometimes you need something a little gentler. That is where the juice thing comes in. The main difference between a smoothie and a juice is that a smoothie has the fibre in tact while the juice is just the juice- fibre removed.
The benefit of drinking veggie juices is that you get a massive concentration of nutrition in a super-powered absorbable form. This means that even if the digestive tract is a bit on the hot and bothered side, you can still reap the benefits of fresh, organic produce by juicing it, getting all those vital enzymes, vitamins and minerals that are essential for healing and can do so without needing the body to do much at all.
The one catch of course is that we want these juices to be veggie based. Yesterday Josh shared why we vote for cabbage juice as a super healing juice. Fruit juices are great, but all that sweet fructose without the fibre will spike blood sugar levels and when dealing with inflammation we want that blood sugar as stable as can be.
Now if you are really suffering and the thought of drinking a tall glass of cabbage juice makes you want to ralph. I suggest freezing it in little ice cube trays and sucking on those. This is also a helpful technique to get the benefits of ginger or peppermint to reduce nausea with digestive upset or even morning sickness.

Funny, I saw on PBS the other day about kids in kindergarten using juicers and making juice from all kinds of fruit and veggies. It made me think about making my own juice and not buying “Juicy” juice.
Definitely taking your cabbage juice idea and trying it!
I believe in the power of natural, whole, non processed foods… juices are very healthy… very well done!

This is fantastic. I’m in the first trimester of my first pregnancy-and nothing goes down easy. I’m off to make some juice for dinner!
Make sure you load it up with veggies- especially with pregnancy. You need to keep the blood sugar stable to keep the nausea at bay! And don’t forget your proteins!
This is brilliant, and such a money-saver! I’ve felt very tempted to buy a juicer, but can’t justify the cost- Good to know I don’t need to anyways.
If you don’t have a nut milk bag, you can buy a paint strainer bag at your local hardware store. They typically run $2 for 2 bags. Now that’s a deal!
Been hearing about this lately- just be careful of what the bags may have been bleached/treated with.

Thanks so much! We juiced for a long time, but eventually gave it because it was too time consuming (we have very busy lives). We gave our juicer away. Now at least if I do feel like juicing I can! Yay
