That’s right my dearies. Not too long ago, I quietly updated my Lunar Cycle Tutorial to add in some vital information which I overlooked in the first edition. Some of this bonus info is about how our eating affects not only our general mood stability but explains that how we eat affects our hormones on a biochemical level. That’s right ma’ladies. The foods you choose to snack on, indulge in regularly or perhaps even make whole meals out of might be contributing to your PMS symptoms and the muffin top many of us past the age of 25 have to funk with. That muffin top, meaning the pudge we collect in the middle, is generally associated with hormones. Don’t get hating on me with this. There is curvaceous and womanly and then there is that belly bloat that doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of our body. That is what I am talking about here.
As we approach the 5 Days Low Glycemic Eating Challenge coming up on Sunday, I wanted to give a little ditty on the relationship between the glycemic index of the foods we eat and our monthly bout of tears, crazies, belly bloaties.
The lunar cycle for balancing hormonal health, like most holistic approaches, works by getting out of the way of nature, and simply letting it do what it does best, regulate us. Part of getting out of the way is also to feed ourselves the food we were intended to eat. The food we ate before the gentleman of invention got in the middle of the field and our table.
The glycemic load of our meals affects our hormones and not just the hormones that regulate blood sugar like insulin but also those that help regulate our overall stress tolerance like adrenaline and cortisol. The endocrine system (our hormonal system) resides in a delicate balance and a few months of abuse will easily tip the scales out of balance. Now imagine what years of monthly sugar or chocolate binges, many moons of late nights and early mornings, a couple double double coffees and sugars a week are going to do, not only to our insulin levels, but also to our adrenal glands. Give me an S! Give me a T! Give me an R (I am spelling STRESS here). Stress on the body is equal to stress on the mind and vice versa. High glycemic diets stress both the mind and body by abusing insulin, adrenalin and cortisol. And man oh man are those powerful chemicals. We get addicted to the way they make us feel.
For the most part, foods that are highly refined and/or high in sugar and lacking in fibre, fats and proteins will be higher on the glycemic index. These foods cause blood sugar levels to spike, insulin levels to spike, adrenaline and cortisol (our body’s stress hormones) to be over-used and all of these cause a strain to the entire endocrine system. Now, if we eat lower glycemic foods- those that are rich in deliciously healthy fats, fibre, protein and in their wholest form, we are getting out of the way of nature. Nature runs its’ coarse, things repair and recover, we feel delightful and come the monthly visitor, we are mood stable to the max. No more weeping. No more tantrums. No more poor little me days. We put less strain and abuse on the various organs and hormones of the endocrine system and further support balanced and regular hormonal cycles. Hey now! Added bonus- our muffin top deflates a little.
That is why diet and lifestyle are so imperative in maintaining hormonal health.
Again I ask, are you in for the challenge?

Amen Sister! I’m in adrenal recovery mode, and I cannot BELIEVE what one single high-sugary-GI-glutenous meal can do to me. Diet has been the #1 factor in changing my situation. And SO TRUE about the PMS/ hormones!!
Thanks for all the wonderful info
Hi. I have so many questions about this Lunar Cycle tutorial. You seem to have more info about your other tutorials. I recently came off the pill, thank god, and am waiting for my body to return to it’s normal pre-pill state. Will reading this Lunar Cycle help with this or is it a completely different thing? Will eating differently help bring back my menstral cycle even if you are just coming off the pill? Help! Or should I wait 6 months or so post-pill to embark on this?
It sure will and every little bit helps to get you back on a natural balanced track.
Meghan, I really want to do the challenge (and read all your tutorials actually) but they just don’t fit in my budget right now. My local library system takes book requests and offers online resources and books and I would like to submit these as a suggestion. I’m really not sure how it would work though since I typically would give a publisher and ISBN, I’m not sure what channels they purchase through. Are you guides only self published and available on your website right now? Any ideas if it could work?
I love the Lunar cycle tutorial! As a woman with PCOS, I found it very helpful. It made sense of this crazy condition going on in my body.
I am learning so much! I have suffered with migraines for 4+ years and the past 2 or so of those have been linked directly with aunt flo. I totally changed my diet to mostly meat and dairy free just over a month ago and within two weeks went through my first period migraine free. For the first time in 2 years I didn’t even have a hint of a headache. I am now in my second cycle and still no migraines. It’s a miracle! And it was all because of food!
Count me in! I’m excited to participate
[...] As I have mentioned before, the very best berry to eat is the one that grows close to home. They are by far my fruit of choice as they are all power-packed with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients and are also low glycemic which means we keep our blood sugar balanced and are less prone to the post fruit bloat (also known as the Muffin Top).
