IMG_6701Two parts of this post title are true and two parts are not true. This is a sauce and it is made from tomatoes. This sauce is not a secret (anymore) and I don’t have a grandma named Meghan (my grandma is Fritzi) and I am not even close to being a grandma.

The reason I have named it Grandma Meghan’s Secret Tomato Sauce is because this sauce is so tomotoliciously amazing that I feel like for a sauce to be this great- it should be the culmination of a life’s work of adjusting a pinch of this or a sprinkle of that and at just 29 years, 11 months and 5 days old (that’s right, 30 in 20 days), I shouldn’t yet have accomplished this level of tomato sauce perfection. Alas, I will toot toot my own horn and say that I have. Yes I have! I can not think of a way to make this sauce more perfect. A little spicey, a little sweet, a medley of flavours, and a bounty of vegetables.

This recipe is the combination of six glorious recipes, plus a little of Megger’s Pizzazzy Bedazzled touch and it is seriously, the best sauce I have ever had, and of course, oh so gloriously healthy. Last I checked, my prostate was in great working order (jokes, ladies and gents, jokes) but the lycopene that is brought out in cooked tomatoes can do a world of good for the prostrate, that little donut of an organ that circles a man’s ureter (ejaculation is also great for prostate health but that’s for another day… or another blog). Tomatoes are in season so get cooking up this goodness and store it in your freezer.

“But Meghan”, you might say. “What about that meat ball looking thing accompanying your brown rice soba noodles and the Secret Tomato Sauce in that picture up top?”

And I might say back, “Oh, those old balls? Come on back tomorrow for that recipe and a name that will make you giggle yourself silly or perhaps cause you to be deeply offended”.

Grandma Meghan’s Secret Tomato Sauce

by Meghan Telpner

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 35-45 minutes

Keywords: one-pot condiment dinner entree lunch dairy-free gluten-free soy-free vegan vegetarian tomatoes Italian

Ingredients (Serves 8)

  • 12 large tomatoes, pureed in a blender or food processor
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red pepper, coarsely chopped
  • 1 green pepper, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup broccoli, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup cauliflower, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cups spinach, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cups kale, coarsely chopped
  • 1 bunch or 1 cup fresh basil, coarsely chopped
  • 2 Tbs honey
  • 1 Tbs dired oregano
  • 1 Tbs sea salt
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tsp thyme
  • 2 Tbs fresh parsley (1 Tbs dried)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • cayenne to taste

Instructions

Put all ingredients into a large pot, prepped as directed in ingredient list.

Simmer covered for 35 minutes.

Simmer uncovered until desired thickness is achieved (some people like their sauce loosely goosey while others enjoy it thick).

Refrain from eating it all up and put some in jars to freeze for later.

And a p.s. on this recipe- it is so good that you may wish to just eat it by the bowl full as a minestrone type soup, or even through some beans in and some extra hot peppers or something and call it chili.

I was just looking at my quinoa/corn box o’ pasta and thinking that I really need a good, healthy tomato sauce to pour on top (of the cooked pasta, not the cardboard box) :)

I also just have to tell you how much I love your sense of humor. Your blog combines two of my favorite things: health and silliness! Thank you for that! :)

  9. Teresa says:

How can I not try out this recipe with all your loving and gushing for this nutrient packed goodness. Guess I’ve got tomatoes on the list for the Farmer’s Market run this week! Oh and I’m seriously on the edge of my seat for these possibly inappropriately named “balls” tomorrow.

  10. It’s so nice to get so many veggies in a sauce and then slather on any pasta or rice you want. Looks very tasty!

  11. Venus says:

Can’t wait to try this. I’ve been having a bit of a cooked tomato craving lately. Quite bizarre as I’ve never liked tomatoes before. But since doing the 5 day vegan challenge Ive been craving cooked tomatoes like you wouldn’t believe. How odd. Lol.

Oh my goddess! That looks great. Perfect for this time of year. And i love this quote : “We are a match made in heaven then Catherine ’cause if you mix health with seriousness you get a snooze fest.” Amen to that! Being open, non-judgmental and silly is the best way to spread the vegan word! thanks Grandma :-)

  16. Hey Meghan!!!
I found your blog less than a week ago and have already read most every post and watched every video!! Obsessed! I love your approach to food and love the tone of your blog!
My mama is from Hamilton Canada and I think it so crazy that you are from Canada too! That sounds weird but I never relate healthy eats to Canada. I had Poutine and fried chicken so I guess that’s why. My grandpa did have a vegetable garden in the backyard and he grew the most amazing tomatoes!!!!
I just wanted to say hello, and tell you that I read daily! Your posts are so very inspirational to me, as I am on a path to a healthy lifestyle. I am studying to be an RD and eventually I want to study holistic nutrition!!!!!
Thanks for spreading the good word and check out my blog!

Meghan, I can’t believe you’re sharing this with us!

Some people go to their graves with these kinds of recipes!!!

After just finishing the smoothie cleanse (bowels are happy, I tell ya!), I am seriously looking forward to some warm comfort meals…

Ps. Those noodles look so good…where do you buy those pups?

  18. Erin says:

Hi Meghan, I just made this (slightly revised, I left out the peppers, kale and cauliflower, but it had the spices and lemon zest). We ate it over spaghetti squash. Wow, it is so good! Jordan (16 months now) loved it too!

  19. Erin says:

…and I added red lentils to absorb some of the liquid.

  20. Marissa says:

Every year around the end of August, my family jars almost 20 bushels of tomatoes for the winter. I cannot think of any better way to treat our beautifully jarred tomatoes than to use them in this recipe. I like to puree this sauce completely and trick all my friends :)

  21. You have no idea what’s coming! You’ll love it I know.

  22. We are a match made in heaven than Catherine ’cause if you mix health with seriousness you get a snooze fest.

  23. You could still make a sauce- just use broth instead of purreed tomatoes and you’ll have a veggie sauce

  24. No sense going to the grave with anything other than a birthday suit… and maybe a pink feathered boa depending on how you roll. The noodles are from the health food store- most seem to carry them.
