A Food Inc. Fig

When is a date not a date?

When it’s a fig.

Get it? It seems to take everyone a moment for that one.

Last Friday night I was out on a fig with Josh (not a date)- dinner and a movie. I brought him a baby coconut I had picked up in Chinatown on my bicycle ride to the restaurant and also a couple bags of raw kelp noodles (more on those another day). He brought me a  CD of a Byron Katie talk. These are the things nutritionists enjoy as gifts. We had a delicious dinner at Camros Organic Eatery followed by an opening night screening of Food Inc. We shared a massive spelt, chocolate chip cookie while we watched the movie.

The movie was great. What disappointed me was that on opening night, the cinema was near empty and I don’t believe that the people who really need to see this movie, are the people who will see this movie.

As images started flashing by of food production plants and supermarket isles, Josh leaned over and whispered “It almost looks like Science Fiction”. It totally did. The food scientists in the film talked about how our food system has become this unbelievable marriage of science and technology. I wrote this down in my little notebook and followed it with a single comment: “Nature?”

Nature seems to have no role left in our food system. That is terrifying, horrifying and is wreaking havoc on our personal and planetary health. As was pointed out in the film, there are no seasons in the produce section of the supermarket and no bones left in the meat section. We have managed to become completely disconnected from the source of our food.

Following the film, Josh and I sat for a while on the giant rock in Yorkville and talked about the movie and watched the same guy in his yellow sports car ‘cruising’ around and around the block with the base of his stereo vibrating the whole street. We wondered how to get that guy to see this movie. We all have one of those people in our lives- someone who need to be woken up to the rest of the world, and potentially to their own life.

The highest grossing movie last weekend was The Hangover. Oh the irony.

If you’ve read Food Politics, Food Matters, Quantum Wellness, In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma or seen the films King Corn, Food Matters, Raw For 30 Days, Fast Food Nation, or Supersize Me, you likely won’t be surprised by what you see in this film.

But if you know someone who hasn’t, take them!

I’m dying to see that move–can’t wait to make the trek downtown for the “event.” But a fig vs date? I think I’m dense on that one!

  2. Lori says:

I’m just aching to see the movie. I’ve seen so much about it. Unfortunately I won’t have the opportunity until Novemeber when I’m back in the U.S. I’ll just have to read everyone’s posts about it until then. :)

Meghan — they disabled the YouTube embedding! :(

  4. Michelle says:

I am looking forward to the movie. It is an excellent point that the people who need to see it won’t be rushing to the theatre.

As an aside, I used to sit on the giant rock in Yorkville and people watch! I do miss T.O at times :-)

I love a good informative documentary!

I also love camros eatery! The food is very home-like…you can feel the love and care that was put into making it!

I couldnt get the video to work. But I saw the preview before and it looked wonderful!

  7. You seem to spend a lot of time with this Josh guy and you gave him a coconut.

  8. The Veg Next Door- You sound like my mom :)

I posted a different version of the trailer. It’s working now.

  9. CoconutGal says:

Meg, in my opinion, when you give someone a coconut– well then that’s a date ;-D

I’m so with you on this. I was sad that our opening was almost empty. And the people that were there were people like you and me who were totally stoked about it but already knew it all.
We gotta just keep doing what we’re doing and hopefully lead by example.
    Have a good weekend dear!!

  11. Yep there has been a buzz all over the web about it. I’ve read the Omnivore’s Dilemma and seen Fast Food Nation and Supersize Me. Can’t wait for that new one!

  12. Jes says:

Fig! I love it! And I loved the movie. I went at 4 pm on the opening day and the theater was 3/4 full here; I hope it’s been staying that way…

  13. Andrea says:

The preview screening was packed. My friends and I agreed that the people who really need to see the movie aren’t those who will. Those who watch it already subscribe to the ideology.

In my review I mentioned the opening scene too and said that the music reminded me of a Tim Burton score.

The rock in Yorkville is one of my favourite places to sit. I occasionally swoon at the clothing in the window across the street while scoffing at the guys in their big sports cars, trying to compensate. Once, I realized that I knew two of the guys, each cruising in their own car. It was shameful. I couldn’t believe that people I know actually do that. When will guys realize that a loud, shiny car will not compensate for lack of personality or intelligence, or a small…? Okay, I won’t finish that sentence.

  14. It really makes no sense at all. Meaning that my night out with Josh wasn’t a date.
