Snack Attack

Is it hard to travel and stay healthy? Yes. Yes it is. The best thing to do though is be prepared. I had this expectation that Ireland was going to be bread, beer and potatoes- so much so that I actually packed apples into my luggage. I didn’t need to have worried though. Healthy, fresh food abounded- though I was happy to have the apples to accompany my morning oatmeal. Healthy options however, are more difficult to come by when the snackies hit. While in the midst of a road trip to the Cliffs of Mohr or the time between the wedding and dinner when another glass of champagne is just not quite what the body needs- it is often best to be prepared and pack a snack.

I am not a proponent of food bars as a snack on a regular basis. If you are at home, at the office, in the car- there are usually better options like eating actual fruit, actual nuts, actual veggies, maybe some granola- essentially eating real food in a whole form. This, however is not an option when you are carrying a little fashiony Armani clutch  and are trying to be discreet about your snacking. Vanessa (aka The Thistle) and I came prepared. She had her coconut bar- made from coconut and rice syrup and I had my Organic Food Bar made with almond butter, dates, sprouted flax, and sprouted quinoa. You won’t catch me eating a bar with any kind of soy by-products, sugar, fructose or the mystery ingredients like lecithin, and emulsifiers that are usually followed by a number code. If you wouldn’t eat the ingredient on its own, why eat it when it is all blended up and shaped like plasticine into a bar like form? Food is food.

The wedding- the main reason we all headed over to Ireland- was absolutely beautiful. A few more photos for your viewing pleasure.

Can’t believe even I fell into the monochromatic trap.

Are there in any other bars you’d recommend. I like larabars and sometimes I make my own at home when I have time since its much cheaper.

LOL at packing apples into your luggage! I love to bring Rawvolution bars on trips, long or short. Better safe than sorry.

What are your thoughts on things like TVP or soy milk? I do a lot of camping and TVP is a staple – where does it stand holistically?

  4. I do the same thing — apples, almond butter, coconut milk, granola, homemade energy bars and dehydrated soups (among other things). I pack a whole duffle bag with food, a little water heater, can opener, knife, camp dishes, etc. I have a whole kit I drag around with me. It sure makes traveling more enjoyable when you have the foods you need and want.

Love your wedding photos. Looks like a lovely time. I also liked your fiddlehead recipe. I’ve never had that, but it sure looks good. You’re right, great name.

    You all look gorgeous.

I’m a fan of Larabars. For weeks I’ve been carefully rationing my last couple. I need to remember to ask my parents to pick me up a box the next time either is at Costco. I bought the last box in December.

Wow!! I need to pay attention – there I am!!! On the healthful blog, I love it!!!!

  7. TeachyGreen- You definitely won’t find textured vegetable protein (TVP) in my kitchen- though I suspect you would have guessed that otherwise why ask specifically right. It is made from defatted soy flour, a by-product of soybean oil. Nothing about this, I’m afraid, is holistic- or whole for that matter.

AshleyH- I recommend bars that have recognizable ingredients- all of them identifiable! Larabars a good choice though are quite high in sugars and should be more of a treat or for necessary circumstances rather than a daily snack option.
