Happy New Moon! Yes, today marks a new moon and as I mentioned yesterday, it is also a chance at new beginnings. (For more on what the this new moon in Taurus means, see what Jenn has to say) And maybe- just maybe, that new beginning might involve regulated hormones. What can regulated hormones do for you? Well when we are in balance, we have a better idea of what phase of our cycle we are in, know when we are most fertile (so whether we need to be more careful or not depending on what outcome we are aiming for) and we have less or no PMS symptoms. That’s right. Less weeping, less anxiety, less depression, less discomfort and less strife with the men in our lives. I am sure I have the men’s attention now.

In my brand shiny new, hot off the presses 13 page Guide to Health e-Tutorial for $5.00, I get into into the nitty gritty of how this works, of how we can use the moon and some essential fatty acids to regulate and balance our raging female hormones completely naturally- that is, if you aren’t on the pill (a discussion for another time). This method of regulation also works to reduce menopausal symptoms.

The summary of how this works goes like this.

We are affected by the moon. Our moods and emotions tend to peak when the moon is full. This means if we feel bad, it is exaggerated and if we feel good- that too peaks. The worst time to be experiencing PMS symptoms and the onset of our period is at the full moon. Everything is felt that much more strongly. The time of new moon, today, we have an inherently more inward focused, calmer energy which makes things a little easier to bear. Ideally this is when we should be getting the visitor.

Every month the moon transitions from a new moon into a full moon and back again. The lunar cycle, from new moon to full moon, takes 28 days to complete. Directly relating to the fact that, on average, a woman’s menstrual cycle is about 28 days (though can range from 25 to 34 days and this is still totally normal).

If our body is in sync with the moon, ideally we would be getting our period with the new moon, and ovulating at the full moon.  We help this to happen by taking essential fatty acid supplements. Flax oil between the new moon and the full moon and primrose oil from the full moon to the new moon. It’s really that simple and straightforward.

In the tutorial, I get into the details of the hows and whys, but in short- these oils flax oil and primrose oil can mimic (in a natural way) our own hormones and help them peak when we need them to peak to help maintain that equilibrium.

I am not suggesting that you get up on your roof tops to see where the moon is at. That’s just silly. In the tutorial, as you know if you did the Green Smoothie Cleanse, I do my best to cover all the bases. I made you a pretty little colour coded calendar that tells you when to take what and how much of each. There you go. Easy as can be.

Who should not do this: If you are on any sort of blood thinning medications or are about to go in for surgery, you may not want to do this. For most of us, high amounts of these polyunsaturated essential fats are amazing at making our blood flow smoothly and our nervous system functioning efficiently (and calmly!), but they do have the effect of thinning the blood slightly and its best not to mess with medications. This is a great program for post surgery as all these essential fats are incredibly healing to the tissues of our body and also anti-inflammatory.

This one is not as extensive as the Green Smoothie Cleanse, but I do believe I cover the necessities:

  • lunarcycleThe Briefest of Brief Hormonal Science Class
  • Explanation of the four main female sex hormones
  • The Birth Control Pill
  • PMS: Premenstrual Syndrome

I bought this Hormal Balancing for my wife because she does have irregular periods and I thought this would be very helpful for her. She read the whole thing from top to bottom. My only question is for the Flax seed and the primose. Does she purchase this in a liquid form or vitamin form? Also you state not to eat things with sugar or caffiene? Is there anything you can recommend to help her cravings for these types of things. Especially sugar. She said she finds when it is her time of the month she really Want and craves lots of sugar.

We really enjoy your blog and the information you provide for a minimal fee. Can’t wait for the next one.

I am in a long term stable relationship. I dont like being on the pill or medication in general but I also do NOT want to get pregnant. What are your thoughts. Could someone on the pill do this type of hormone balancing?

  3. Amandamoo says:

    Hi Meghan,
Thanks for doing this! I’m excited to read your tutorial! I second AshleyH’s question in that I’m on the pill but have made the commitment to be off of it in July (when my prescription expires and I have my annual exam to make sure everything is healthy down there). Along with Ashley’s question about the oils while on the pill, could you address effective alternatives to the pill at some point?

    Thanks for all you do!

  4. Amandamoo says:

I just finished reading the tutorial (it was great, btw) and am wondering if eating the phytoestrogen foods in combination with the flax oil during the new moon-full moon time period would be too much… For example, if I’m taking the flax oil and adding soy milk to my tea and have tofu for dinner, is that too much?

Also, crazy thing, while I am on the pill, my mentrual flow doesn’t start until much later in the week when it’s supposed to start. Looking at the moon cycle, it’s like my body has been waiting until as close to the new moon as it can for all these years despite the chemicals forcing it to happen sooner. Amazing.

  5. Congratulations Meghan, this is great!

I noted the person’s comment on sweets. A big toughy for me too. I reach for brown rice cakes topped with almond butter and cinnamon when cravings strike. The cinnamon brings out the natural sweetness in the almond butter. I also go for smoothies made with ripe banana, frozen blueberries, and unsweetened almond milk. Depending on the sweetness of the fruit, this can be like a dessert!

  7. The Ladycomp fascinates me. The website claims that there are only 6 days on which a woman can get pregnant and after years of being on hormonal birth control on and off, this could be the next method (though currently I’m on my favourite hormonal method so far, and it was chosen after a lot of research and apprehension about using a hormonal method).

The idea of syncing with moon phases is something I’m curious about, in part because I’m a nerd for all new health information.

  8. I meant, the information is new to me. :) I knew it was a narrow window but I didn’t know that it was that narrow.

I’m glad that you’re not just giving away this information (and other e-tutorials) for free. It’s inexpensive enough to almost be free – that is, pretty much anyone can afford it – but by charging for it you’re putting value on it and not devaluing yourself. You’re also reinforcing that you’re a business. I’m guessing that these are things that you considered.

Hope you’re having a great trip.

Hi Meghan…I am interested in your tutorial. I’m wondering…I am 48, had a hysterectomy almost two years ago. I am currently using bio-identical hormones. Would this information be of benefit to me and balancing my hormones and maybe getting to a place where I didn’t need the bio-identical hormones?
I love your website! Thanks for all your hard work! :)

  12. Jennifer R. says:

Meghan, this is so timely! I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and she mentioned the cycle of the moon coinciding with the menstrual cycle and put me on flax oil and EPO (different times)… I am one to read all I can so I ordered your tutorial to learn more. Thanks!

  13. Andrea says:

Sounds like Jennifer R. has a progressive doctor. Those are rare.

Robin: If your doctor is an expert in bio-identical hormones he or she might also be able to answer your questions regarding lunar cycles, etc. Another expert on bio-identical hormones is this guy: http://www.drpettle.com/

Meghan: Hope you’re having a fantastic trip.

  14. Allison says:

Meghan, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease do a coffee detox tutorial! I have to say, in many ways I love coffee – or the ritual of coffee – and yet I can really feel that it’s not helping my fatigue and achiness. I’m down to 1-2 cups a day (5 years ago it was probably almost a pot a day), but I have trouble imagining giving it up completely – it’s almost been part of my identity, and so central a part of my social and family interactions. Actually I’d love to hear what you have to say about making healthy eating changes and how you deal with it when you’re out – visiting family, meeting friends, etc – those seem to be the hardest times for me.

  15. Aryn says:

Meghan — Do you stop adding flax oil in your smoothies during the EPO weeks?

I’m very excited about this — I took EPO regularly during high school/college and it greatly diminished my cramps/PMS symptoms, but I had never heard of alternating it with flax.

  16. Stephanie says:

Help! I’ve been to several Health Food stores and I can’t find any vegan EPO! It all comes in gelatin capsules. Is there a vegan EPO that you recommend? Where would you buy it from?

  17. Stephanie says:

Thank you! I’m in California. Berkeley, actually — so I’m shocked I can’t find a veggi version in stores!

  18. Hey Meghan,
I’ve been interested in natural hormone balancing for awhile, but I haven’t been able to find such information before now. I’m 25 and I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and I have not menstruated without the use of birth control pills since about five years ago. Too bad I can’t come see you, since I live in Florida, otherwise we would have met a long time ago! Would this guide help someone like me? Otherwise, do you have a way of doing virtual consultations?

    Thank you!

  19. Loren says:

    Hi Meghan,
I purchased this e-tutorial in the fall, and finally read it last night. I see that your handy lunar calendar goes until April 2010, so I’ve found one for the entire 2010 year. To start this program, I gather that I should start on the next new moon, which is February 14, 2010 (according to your calendar), with flax. Please let me know if I’ve got this right. Thanks!!

  20. AJ- For easing off coffee- the best advice I can give is to do it gradually. Drinking coffee as often as normal but in smaller amounts than slowly transitioning to a green tea and until no coffee remains. I got my mom off coffee and if she can stop- anyone can!

The sugar is a little trickier- especially if she is hooked on coffee (I really do need to do a post on coffee.. oh idea! a coffee detox tutorial!) Coffee fatigues our adrenal glands and when our adrenal glands are strained, we don’t cope as efficiently with stress or in balancing hormones- hence the link between PMS and sugar. Making sure your wife gets lost of rest around this time will help significantly along with doing relaxing activities- long walks, yoga, hot baths, meditation etc. Keeping healthier sweet options around can also help to curb the craving- dried mango is a good one, bananas and almond butter with a itty drizzle of honey, hot water with some coconut oil or cinnamon bark tea will help balance blood sugar and also has a sweet taste. Just boil a couple cinnamon sticks in 3-4 cups of water for about 20 minutes or try this recipe: http://meghantelpnerblog.com/2009/04/20/warm-tea-on-a-cold-night/ Its important to eliminate all sugar from the diet (as I wrote about here: http://meghantelpnerblog.com/2009/04/20/the-bad-habits-pay-us-a-visit/) as any amount will simply feed the craving.

  21. AshleyH: It wouldn’t have the same affect but aligning your cycle with the moon- even on the pill would help reduce some of the emotional symptoms relating to PMS.

Amandamoo: I never advocate adding soy into the diet. It is a very difficult food to digest (note to me- write about soy). I would recommend cutting back on the soy foods and doing the flaxoil and then doing your best to eliminate the soy foods in the full moon to new moon phase.

As for natural birth control methods. There is only one that I have come across that has safety ratings equal to and in some cases greater than the pill or condoms. It has the worst name ever but I am a huge advocate and am in discussions with them currently about becoming an affiliate to I can get a discount for my clients (and readers of course). It is quite expensive but can be paid in installments. Have a look: http://ladycomp.ca/show.php/index

  22. canadianfoodiegirl- this is the oldest information there is!

  23. Robin- I can’t answer that as there are so many factors that influence our hormonal cycles. I could guarantee that it would do no harm, so it could never hurt to try. Even if you are not able to go completely off the synthetic hormones- you may be able to reduce your dosages over time. Every bit helps! So pleased that you are enjoying my site!

  24. Aryn- That’s a great question and it sort of has to depend on the individual. For the first couple of months I would suggest laying off the flax oil for those couple weeks and perhaps subbing in a cold pressed walnut or hemp oil- so you are still getting the omega 3′s without the phytoestrogen effects.

  25. I am going to have to look into this- I know you can get it in veggie capsuls, just not sure on the brands- are you in Canada?
