The below is the recording of an ‘appearance’ I made on the CBC Radio 3 show Lanarama talking about organics. I couldn’t work out how to upload an audio file, so I put together a slideshow of my time at Everdale Oragnic Farm for your enjoyment.

I never cease to be amazed by the seeming round-about route that our lives take, to bring us to where we are at this moment. Though I don’t think I have mentioned this thus far, my intention growing up was never to be a nutritionist. Actually, it couldn’t have been further from my mind. I wasn’t one of those little girls always cooking in the kitchen or wanting to be outside tending a garden. Nope. When I wasn’t shaking my jazz hands in dance class, I was hiding away in my little sewing room making my own clothes.

My first round and at post-high-school education was not in the nutrition field at all, but was in fashion. And in fashion school was where I met Lana (see my Superhero Team). Lana and I had shared a fondness for fun outfits, laughing until we weep and travelling. We both found ourselves on the study exchange program to Australia where we bonded over surf boards and uber tanned blond boys. Neither of us ever went on to work in the fashion industry.

So it made perfect universal sense when Lana called me up to talk about organics on her CBC Radio 3, indie music show, Lanarama (Listen on CBCRadio3.com, Weekdays 3-6 pm PST and 6-9 pm EST). I was a featured guest on Foodie Friday where Lana was asking her listeners, “Do You Eat Organic?”

Many of the respondents were annoyingly ridiculous in their comments such as “Heck no. As if I want bugs stowing away on a red pepper in order to lay eggs in my belly basket” and another listener fearing that he might ‘catch hippie’. He could be so lucky!

There were also the more sensible responses as , “The health benefit is really just one aspect of the organic industry. I try to buy organic whenever I can also to support farmers who wish to practice more sustainable farming methods.”

My personal preference is always to go organic, though this time of year in Canada, it is not always possible. My order of preference is as follows:

  1. Local organic
  2. Local
  3. Organic from elsewhere ( though never anything from Mexico or China).

Both Lana and I were surprised that her CBC audience was not all pro organic, and so I am curious about what your thoughts might be? Do you eat organic? Why or why not?

Congratulations, Meghan! That is so exciting. And despite the couple of jerks you mention, I think there is a groundswell of support for organics (and healthy eating) these days. You’re way ahead of the curve–and we need more people like you promoting healthy eating!

Hope you have a wonderful holiday–! :)
