No, no, no. I am not referring to holiday romances, though I have been known to have had one or several in my past. It is the holiday season and often people escape the cold climate for warmer places (or at least places where the cold can be properly appreciated where it belongs- on top of mountains). What I am talking about here is keeping the food love going, even while on holidays.
I don’t choose my vacation spots the same way I assume most people do (the most food, alcohol, sunshine for the lowest price). I have been asked by many people where I am going for my annual Winter escape. Last year found me with a dream job at The Body Holiday in St. Lucia working as the resident nutritionist. This year I wanted something a little different, something a little more earthy and a little more sustainable and a lot more yoga retreat. Through Topical Escapes, I found the perfect yoga retreat. Lead by Jenn Pici, the yoga retreat takes place at a magical place called Crescent Moon Cabins on the Isle of Dominica.
Now, obviously, there are tons of different retreats I could choose from. What sold me on this one, first and foremost, was Jenn and her delightful outlook on yoga, the sweetness she radiates and her use of awesome music in her practices; but also, it was on the location. When I plan a holiday, I strongly consider what the food situation is going to be. Sure I could go anywhere and pack a supply of nuts and dried fruit to live off, but I prefer going places where I am not the ‘birdseed eater’ being difficult at meal time.
This magical place where Jenn chose to host her retreat grows it’s own food! The water comes from a nearby mountain side spring, they have a green house and what absolutely sealed the deal from me was that they also have their own goats for milk and cheese, and also, they have chickens that provide the eggs! And you know by now how much I <heart> Chicken! Essentially, this is a place where we will all ride the short bus together, caring equally about how we nourish our bodies through yoga and the best food, and also the mark we will leave on the environment in which we will be living.
Many people like to use holidays as an excuse to binge drink their all-inclusive packages worth or ensure they don’t miss out on cruise’s midnight buffet. My goal, has always been to come back from a holiday feeling and looking better than when I left. A unique concept for some, but it does make the return home easier and in that regard, the holiday will have served its complete purpose in providing the opportunity to fully relax and recharge.
This amazing retreat is only one of the stops on my tropical adventure. I do know that they have a few spots left so if you are interested, go here or contact Jenn through her blog.

Oh! Funny. Jenn is from Boston, right? Haven’t met her but I’ve seen her name on the yoga circuit
We went to Kripalu for our last getaway–it’s a residential yoga center in Western Massachusetts with the best food! and great programs. We definitely came home healthier. This year though, my husband and I are going to Puerto Rico over New Year’s and I have to say I AM nervous about finding good food…
